A massive art project in Central Park began to take shape yesterday, with the installation of huge steel beams that will soon turn walkways into curtains of color.
The beams are needed to hold saffron-hued ribbons floating through the wind from metal plates framing 23 miles of park pathways.

What a useless tool. Let him slather San Franciso in vaseline and hang out there. New York is a productive place.

I cannot understand the opposition...I can understand not everyone likes his work...hey that's art, but it's not like Mappeltwerp...and it's not subsidized by any government agancy.
The work is temporary.
It doesn't cost the city zip.
He doesn't take volunteer labor but pays above minimum wage and union rates.
It brings in tourists.
When it's gone, nobody will ever know.
The materials used can be used in other ways.
If you don't want to buy the art, don't.
What's the problem?
It's ugly, stupid, arrogant, megalomaniacal, vulgar, and intrusive.
It pollutes the PUBLIC park -- which is the only place in NYC where one can experience anything remotely approaching nature -- with a giant monstrosity of modern "art".
who is paying for this crap?
I agree - free art for arts sake is acceptable -- you don't like it? It's in the public, so you can criticize it publicly.
;>)
I prefer outdoor art like that - it makes for lively discussion and idea exchange also - provided both side have some civility to them.
PS --- I usually think those displays are best placed in the Gobi desert for a week rather than where they can be seen, but is only my artistic opinion.
What exactly is wrong with the wrapping? I've always thought his work was quite interesting.
It's mindless, exhibitionism. There is no thought, no creativity, no substance. It's functionaly equivalent to hanging the laundry of an obsessive, mono-chromatic megalomaniac. (If the color is black, I think I haved just described the majority of residents of New York and Boston wanna-be pseudo-sophisticates.
Well, you have to give him some credit for doing something entirely different and being the first one to do so. Personally, the wrappings he has done that I have seen have looked amazing with the wind flowing through them and the fact that they look so serene. There are many reasonable people that appreciate his work.
I spent a big chunk of my life in NYC (one block away from the Park)...and I love CP and Christo.
Rodney...Who is paying for it?
From their website
http://christojeanneclaude.net/faq.html
Who pays for the installations?
Christo & Jeanne-Claude pay the entire cost of the artworks themselves. They earn all of the money through the sale of the preparatory studies, early works from the 50s and 60s and original lithographs on other subjects.
They do not accept grants or sponsorships of any kind. They do not accept donated labor (volunteer help). They do not accept money for things like posters, postcards, books, films, T-shirt and mugs or any other products at all. None.
NEVER on any project Except Jeanne-Claude's mother, everyone who works is paid: normal union wages for specialized professional workers, and just above minimum wage for non-skilled workers. One important exception: for the Wrapped Coast, One Million Square Feet, Little Bay, Australia, 1968-69 out of 125 paid workers, eleven architecture students refused to be paid. Three of them became artists after the project and are now well known.
Ok, so it doesn't cost me anything. That still doesn't mean I want a big homo project taking over the park.
Dude,
Quoting firebrand
"What's the problem?

You sound like a bleeding heart, anti-development liberal (a disguised enviromaniac).
I hope I don't think I hear anything about evil profits...
Who's a Homo?
The frick'en park is 873 square miles. No room for ya?
99% of the people who care about what Christo does.
I like Christo, and I am not a homo.
Many on this thread like Christo and they are not homos.
I think that those who don't like Christo, a man with imagination, vision, who employs people and creates business, are the homos.
Whoa...
So now that he funds his projects himself, pays decently...he's a Homo?
I vunder vehr you got dat data, and I vunder vat type of brain comes to such conclusions. This isn't the third grade is it?
