January 4, 2005 -- Relatives of 9/11 victims vowed yesterday to press Congress to tighten the borders and crack down on illegal immigration. "We're going to hold their feet to the fire," Joan Molinaro, a member of 9/11 Families for a Secure America, said during a press conference at Ground Zero.
Members of the group, which represents families of 300 people who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said they wanted to remind Congress, which convenes today, that it must revisit border security and tighter identification requirements for visas and driver's licenses.
The group joined Rep. James Sensenbrenner (Wis.), House Judiciary Committee chairman, and some other prominent Republicans last year in a failed attempt to include measures against illegal immigration in the intelligence bill that President Bush signed last month.
Sensenbrenner is expected to re-introduce the legislation today.
Families for a Secure America has charged that the failure to keep out unauthorized aliens led directly to the 9/11 attacks.
The group calls the problem of illegal entry into the country "massive" and warns that it has grown over the past 30 years.

The realistic situation in Congress is that the Tancredoists don't have the votes, the remaining republicans don't have the votes, and the democrats don't have the votes.
I'm merely suggesting to you that the compromise has already been made and its just a matter of manufacturing the consent for that compromise.
Good stuff and all...but where were these people during the Clinton admin. This makes it look like it's the Bush admin's fault...
-The reality is any "compromised" bill will most likely allow guest workers to go back home after 18 months of work, and collect Social Security. See this article for info on that:

Are you willing to compromise on that isue? That's what the Rats and Rinos want...and it will bankrupt Social Security.
Tancredo's plan addresses that issue, but not forcefully enough, imo..

4. Remove Incentives for Illegal Immigration
"The United States has lost control over its immigration policy. Over one million persons enter our nation illegally each year and we have antiquated and error-prone systems for knowing who our legal visitors are and for enforcing their visa time limits. Every poll shows that over 75% of citizens support border security and strict enforcement of our immigration laws. They want our immigration policies fixed.
Here is my four-point plan for achieving control of our borders and enforcing sensible immigration policies."
1. Secure our Nation’s Borders
Increase Border Patrol manpower from the present 11,500 to 20,000 (HR 3534).
Use the U.S. Military until the Border Patrol reaches that manpower level (HR 277).
Accelerate the use of new technology and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to identify and help apprehend smugglers and trespassers.
Double the capacity of the detention centers for apprehended trespassers.
End the “catch and release” policy by instituting fines and jail time for repeat offenders.
Require stiff prison sentences for convicted “coyotes” and felons who return to the U.S. after deportation.
Accelerate the implementation of the “USVISIT” biometric identifier program for all foreign nationals entering the country through our ports of entry.
2. Establish a Genuine Guest Worker Program
Enact a genuine Guest Worker Bill (HR 3534) to allow any foreign national to enter the US legally to work for up to one year in a job that cannot be filled by a citizen.
Require employers to advertise all jobs on an internet bulletin board and for two weeks before hiring a Guest Worker.
Require illegal aliens already in the U.S. to first return home and apply for jobs through the legal processes.
3. Improve “Interior Enforcement” of Immigration Laws
Provide adequate resources to the “Detention and Removal” branch of the Bureau of Customs and Immigration Enforcement (BICE) to allow apprehension and removal of all criminal aliens.
Enact the “CLEAR” Act (HR 2671) to give local law enforcement incentives and reimbursements for participating in immigration law enforcement.
Establish stiff fines and tax penalties for employers who violate the law by hiring illegal aliens, and devote adequate resources to identify and prosecute those employers.
4. Remove Incentives for Illegal Immigration
Employers who hire illegal aliens should face stiff fines and tax penalties (see#2 above).
Federal and State agencies should be prohibited from recognizing the Mexican Government’s “Matricula Consular” ID card.
States that grant driver’s licenses to illegal aliens should suffer loss of federal highway funds.
Children born to illegal aliens should not be given citizenship status (HR 1567).
Federal court rulings and other policies that require health and educational services to illegal aliens should be overturned.
Amend Social Security Act to deny credits for wages earned in illegal employment or to self-employed engaged in illegal activities (HR 1631).
Insist that the Government of Mexico extradite felony criminals who retreat into Mexico.
Encourage the Government of Mexico to repeal its Dual Citizenship law.

Mr Gaheen's response corrected a notion I mistakenly had Thanks. I am still unconvinced that stricter controls will in any way curb or deter evil bastards out to commit mayhem . And I am even more skeptical of the value of widows and orphans as spokespersons for change.
Mr. Gaheens scornful depiction of a few widows cum Kerry worshipers ratifies my skepticism.
Being misinformed is bad. Being stupid is worse. The venture as described smells to high heaven. Who are these people? What really is the game?
That's kinda my point. Are these "FIXES" going to stop terrorism or even act as a deterrent? Immigration is way the hell out of control on purpose...that is, by intention and collective agreement.
Going after reforms through a door marked "Stopping Evil" is wrong headed. This is a law enforcement problem. Not a legislation exercise. And fancy pants lawyers and teary-eyed widows do not inspire anything except ice-cold skepticism.

The way our illegal immigration problem is handled by it's defenders in our government and the general media (compared to other serious threats) is it's own lesson on how corruption only leads to more corruption.

I pointed out that the Bush plan does not exist in Congress and consequently has no viability to be considered or negotiated by Congress.
If there is no Bush bill as an alternative to the many bills that do exist, why are many in the media and at FR saying that Bush is leading us down that path to ruination?

The plan does exist, as I pointed out. Now you want to call it the Bush ‘Bill.’ It was never a ‘Bill’; it was always a 'plan'.
Everyone in Congress knew a Amnesty/Guest Worker program would not fly in an election year, so no 'Bill' was introduced, except Cornyn's and Tancredo's.
The lack of support for their bills has more to do with who they are then the lack of support for a Amnesty/Guest Worker program.
You'll see many bills formatted on Bush's plan coming soon. Democrats and RINO's will support this fiasco, while a few good men and women will oppose it and be labeled racists and such.
Because the groundwork for this fiasco was laid down by President Bush. His plan is a fiasco and the idiots in Congress will make it worst.
Yes, you are right about the council. But, once again, had you bothered to read the article, you would have noticed that the particular passage was being quoted from an article published by the Heritage Foundation. Not hardly a socialist group.
Thanks for the fact sheet. This is where the Totalization Agreement with Mexico comes into play. Bush is admitting that he cannot control jack-sh!t about Mexicans. He has to promise American Social Security to control the Mexicans.
