Going to the 2005 SHOT Show!

I have a chance to go the the 2005 SHOT show in Las Vegas, and I'm not missing it.

My Buddy Dave is a cop. He's a sniper, among other things, for the Coral Springs (FL) Police Department's SWAT group. Dave has been working for about a year with some cool guys from a group called "Adopt-a-Sniper" http://adoptasniper.org

From the Adopt a Sniper website:

"Snipersonline UA and Sniper's Paradise have several members and Sniper friends actively engaged in the battle against terrorism. Our friends are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the number of snipers deployed around the world right now. These snipers are deployed in the theaters of combat, both in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as other locations overseas. Many of these are full time law enforcement officers that have been activated for regular duty action.

"Our memberships have chosen to help support our fellow snipers, and brothers in arms, by helping supply them with items that they need to get the job done better as well as things to make their lives easier while on deployment. This has been everything from the basic hygiene type items such as handy wipes to tactical products such as holsters, high speed rucksacks, new optics, rifle accessories, to mini binoculars and batteries. "

This year, the Adopt a Sniper guys are setting up a table at the 2005 SHOT Show to display their wares and sign up supporters.

I don't know if you've ever heard of the SHOT show or not, but it's when every single manufacturer in the firearms industry goes to show their new products. Gunshops and other resellers go there to look and to place orders for their stores. Nothing is actually sold there, it's all "look and touch". The official site for the SHOT show is http://shotshow.org.

It is rumored that Smith and Wesson will unveil a new cartridge size there this year, something in the neighborhood of .470 Magnum. In January, 2002 they unveiled their big .500 Magnum revolver, the largest in the world.

In addition to gunmakers, there are people who manufacture gun components, holster companies, gunpowder folks, bullet makers, flashlights (that are made for attaching to guns), knives, clothing, you name it. Anything you can think of to do with guns, they'll be there.

Only members of the "Industry" can get tickets to it. Technically, it's not open to the public. Most people who want to go can usually get credentials from a gun shop, or a local manufacturer. Fortunately for me, Dave's pals at Adopt a Sniper were okay with him bringing me along.

I hope to meet up with quite a few friends I have made over the internet out there. I have "internet friends" who actually work in the industry, and this will be a nice chance to meet those folks. I also hope to bump into my favorite author, John Ross. He is supposed to be bringing a Smith and Wesson .500 Magnum that he trimmed to 5 inches, to show Smith and Wesson, to try to get them to produce it.

It will be a long four days, me serving as adopt-a-sniper's "gopher" for the most part, covering the table when they're getting lunch or other wise humping merchandise boxes for them. I told them that I'd do whatever it took to get into the SHOT show.. this is really the opportunity of a lifetime. I offered to sleep in the hotel closet if that's what it took but they assured me that there was plenty of room. Bunch of good guys, really.

What a great time this is going to be!

Scott

Yeha "adopt a Sniper" is really cute, but may I suggest they try a name a little more PR?

Because between adopting a Sniper and adopting a dolphin, I'd say most people would go for the dolphin. They're not going to get many 3rd grader bake sales with a name like that.

Our crew will be there under media passes. Great place to renew old friendships, break bread with new ones and just hang out and talk guns and hunting.

More testosterone in those 2 convention halls then in Rosie O'Porkchop, almost.

BTW before Harpseal passed away we had talked about his neighbor who was the Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at Charter Arms. Alledgedly the company was gonna make a bobbed hammer version of the .44 Special Bulldog Pug. If ya see the Charter Arms Booth shake their tree and see what falls out if ya have time !

Wish I had time and money to go up there.....yer a lucky pup !

Stay safe and share yer digital intel if ya can !
