A HIGH IQ is a hindrance for women wanting to get married, while it is an asset for men, according to a study by four British universities.
The study found the likelihood of marriage increased by 35 per cent for males for each 16-point increase in IQ.
But for females, there was a 40 per cent drop for each 16-point rise.
The findings, by the universities of Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, were published in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.
The study was based on the IQs of 900 males and females between their 10th and 40th birthdays.
Paul Brown, a psychologist and professor at Nottingham University, told the Sunday Times: "Women in their late 30s who have gone for careers after the first flush of university and who are among the brightest of their generation are finding that men are just not interesting enough."
Writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner said intelligent men often prefered a less brainy partner.
"A chap with a high IQ is going to get a demanding job that is going to take up a lot of his energy and time.
"In many ways he wants a woman who is an old-fashioned wife and looks after the home, a copy of his mum in a way."

After reading all the posts in this thread I keep finding myself thinking about unrealistic expectations in our society. We're constantly bombarded with images of luxury $50,000 cars, 3,000 square-foot houses, vacations, and basically the vision of "having it all". A huge proportion of our population lives under crushing credit-card debt with loan-shark interest rates. When I stop to think about it, I guess I don't feel all that surprised when they say that so many marriages fail. How can they survive this sort of pressure?
I mean, you would think that getting into debt up to your eyeballs isn't a wise thing to do, yet look at how many people do it. What, then, do people do when something unexpected happens, like the loss of a job, a pregnancy, a medical crisis, or any of a million other things (case in point: I just got laid off on 12/31, but I avoid debt like Michael Moore avoids healty foods, so I have a nice nest egg from which to draw while I look for another job).
We put ourselves into hock for new cars all the time. A mortgage, two new cars, and kids is just crushing, and if one parent decides to stay home, how long can the other parent survive the strain? Both might be intelligent, but I wonder about the wisdom of people in this country anymore. I've bought two used vehicles over the years (an '87 T-Bird and a '97 Explorer). Being 35 and single I get ridiculed all the time about having two Ford relics, but my response is always: "they run, and they're paid for". Any my (married) best friend has the b**ls to complain how he's barely making ends meet. Hello? Were the two new (and not basic by any stretch) cars really necessary?
I don't know how else to put it -- the American Dream is great, but our expectations need to be realistic. When they aren't we're just setting ourselves up for disappointment. There are probably countless ways in which this can affect marriages (and to be sure not all marriages fail from this sort of thing), but it can't be healthy nonetheless.
Of course, I'm just speculating -- I tend to sit back, observe quietly, and learn what I can (I've pretty much been scared into paralysis at this point) -- so feel free to tell me I'm crazy :^)

I know a number of Mr. Mom's who lost their job, or who became injured on the job and can't work, and who rely on the wife to slog it out in the working world.
I don't necessarily think that's true. I think most decent, well-rounded men want to be married and have families.
Sadly, nost of the men I meet are either married or morons, FReeper company excepted, of course. I don't really mean that as an insult. I really admire some of the men I work with, but they're all married. And then, there's some the clients....definitely in the shallow end of the gene pool. I guess I need to get out more, but I never seem to have the time.
Although her raw score was 89th percentile, they awarded her an automatic 100 because of her grades.

It took me 45 years to find a woman to marry. Mrs Drumbo is smarter than I, ten years younger and currently working on her computer programing degree. I'm so tarded I can barly habla HTML. Her smarts matter, but love was the final answer ('Til death do us part). Maybe the scientists should factor that into their goofy little study - they'd be out of work in no time.

LOL!!!!! Actually when there was a vanity thread where everyone was listening their IQs, I said to myself 'Wow this explain EVERYTHING'.
