Brainy girls have marriage handicap

A HIGH IQ is a hindrance for women wanting to get married, while it is an asset for men, according to a study by four British universities.

The study found the likelihood of marriage increased by 35 per cent for males for each 16-point increase in IQ.

But for females, there was a 40 per cent drop for each 16-point rise.

The findings, by the universities of Aberdeen, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow, were published in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.

The study was based on the IQs of 900 males and females between their 10th and 40th birthdays.

Paul Brown, a psychologist and professor at Nottingham University, told the Sunday Times: "Women in their late 30s who have gone for careers after the first flush of university and who are among the brightest of their generation are finding that men are just not interesting enough."

Writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner said intelligent men often prefered a less brainy partner.

"A chap with a high IQ is going to get a demanding job that is going to take up a lot of his energy and time.

"In many ways he wants a woman who is an old-fashioned wife and looks after the home, a copy of his mum in a way."

Lol. My point is that, while an intelligent woman might go for the high-powered career, expensive SUV, big house with oppressive mortgage, etc., I wouldn't consider such a person wise if she didn't realize that there are sacrifices to be made with such an arrangement, like perhaps a meaningful relationship. IMHO it just isn't possible to "have it all" -- we're not all multimillionaires, and there are only so many hours in the day to earn the means to get all of the things we want in life.

I read somewhere that the largest cause of divorce was financial problems. I can't help but wonder how many of those were due to people trying to live beyond their means.

Some may find that website a bit errrr... MUCH?

Right. I'm not saying that the guys I know have this schmuck's attitude, but kind of a lighter-weight version of it. What he says about the fear of losing everything (literally and figuratively) in a divorce is definitely true. There, it actually helps to be well off, cause you know there's gonna have to be prenups anyway, and it isn't a hedge on the marriage.

When you consider how important decisions are in life, people are whacked. Most people spend more time picking a new car than a mate. Hollywood has swollen our heads with unrealistic images and fantastic ideas. And when Prince Charming vanishes into a 7-day weekly cycle of overwork and golf, or Princess Fair develops a viper-sharp tongue or the spending habits of Suha Arafat, the next thing they are reaching for the rip-cord grip.

The most important thing you are ever going to "buy" in life is a mate, do some consumer research and don't let a good sales job flim-flam you.

PS: I just realised that the NoMarriage.com link I put up contains some extremely blue language. I apologise to all that were not warned. I should have posted the warning with the link, sorry! I'm an old soldier and constantly have to guard my tongue around the womenfolk -- I just don't notice those, er, emphasis words. -C18F

Perhaps it is that smart women are simply more selective in their choice of mates.

You hoo, y'all. This could be fun.

'Sorry about your "scars." The really smart woman chooses to marry a really smart man so that they are partners and best friends as well as lovers. Life is never dull for such a couple, and any children from such a wholesome marriage are fortunate indeed.

Many people overestimate their own intelligence. It's true. Writing a term paper on the feminist paradigm in the post-modern Maori lesbian subculture might impress some people, but my minimum is multivariable calculus.

When my wife and I were first married we both took the federal service entrance exam. I scored 98.7 and she scored 89. I think it surprised her because she graduated college with a 3.97 GPA while mine was 2.01 .

I think I probably had one of the lowest GPA of anyone who ever graduated since a 2.0 was required.

Speaking as a smart woman who married at the age of 20 when she was not so smart-I am afraid to get married again. It scares the hell out of me.

I think there are a few on this thread who are confusing "educated" with "intelligent." One can be both, but one can also be either without the other. I've known people who were plenty smart without a college education, but there are educated fools in abundance, too. Just turn on the TV and listen to a politician or a journalist if you doubt it.

Oooooh. Great point!

According to your definition, you'll see about 3 'smart' women a year....

I made it through Fourier Series, Euler Transforms--engineering-type math.... I never saw any women in those courses.

And their looks will be appreciated only by their undertaker.

Oh, how true. And their stupid cats won't even know they're dead, but will instantly transfer whatever affection a cat has to whoever brings the bowl of Friskies.

A very good Asheville, NC based songwriter, David Wilcox, wrote a wry song about -- of all things -- breast implants:

Well the surgeons try to tell you
That the world will love you better
If you let 'em cut your body
And put those mounds inside your sweater
But just think of the investment
Now how long those things will last
You know, silicone is permanent
Even after you have passed
When the rest of you has faded
In some box under some stone
Yeah you'll still have your silly cones
Balanced on your bones

It's on his East Asheville Hardware album. Highly recommended, if you can bear listening to singer-songwriters. It seems like you and Wilcox are on the same wavelength, here.

LOL

Good point, though.

Smart women can be as selective as they wish. Men have more skills in that area when looking for a wife.
