Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabian authorities Friday beheaded and crucified a Saudi national convicted of killing and robbing his mother.

The Saudi Press Agency quoted an Interior Ministry statement that said the convict was executed and crucified in public in the southern province of Baha.

Friday's beheading brought to 34 the number of people executed this year in Saudi Arabia, mostly smugglers.

Earlier this month an Iraqi and three Pakistani drug smugglers were beheaded in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah.

I had no idea that beheading offenders was practised by the Saudi government.

This is insane. And these people are supposedly going after terrorists?

Pardon me, did I read this right? How do you behead and crucify? Do they mean he was beheaded and his corpse, sans head, was mounted on a cross? Other than shock value (and a possible insult to Christians?), what's the point? I plead ignorance; do they still use crucifixion in the Middle East as a method of execution? I believe it originated in Persia prior to Christ's time...old habits die hard I suppose....

Would you rather they award a man who killed his own mother with a lollipop?

Yes, and it's not done with one fell swoop. Three strikes are made in carrying out the sentence each one a minute apart if I remember correctly.

I would rather they put him to death by lethal injection, or whatever "civilized" method is available.

For goodness sake, even a firing squad would be fine. Beheading? What the heck is that for? So long as the guy dies for his crime.

Decapitation, if performed quickly, is as humane a method of execution as exists. The French guillotine was perhaps the best method of execution ever invented.

Quick, efficient, worked first time, every time.

All this guy had to claim was his mother was a slut and it was an honor killing, he'd have gotten a free pass.

Sorry, I'm all in favour of the death penalty, but there is no need for beheading in this day and age. Barbaric.

How did you think that they did it? Have you never seen the videos of the beheading in public by sword of those convicted? What would be better frying in an electric chair, shot by execution squad, choke to death by gas, or possibly be aware that you cannot breathe as a result of lethal injection?

I don't think you choke to death with a lethal injection. I understood that you are given sedatives first, and then you just fall asleep when the lethal drug takes effect.

I would choose this method. Is this not what is used in America? I thought this was the method used because it was most humane. As long as the criminal is dead....

Which method would you choose for yourself, if you had to make the choice?

oh, yeah.

they do that all the time.

a woman that i know was married to an oil worker and they lived and worked in saudi arabia for 20 years, until retiring back in the states.

she said that whenever there was a beheading, attendance was mandatory in her community. someone came around and told them to be in the commons at such and such time. the women put on their headscarves and went as intructed.

As a Canadian who grew up in Saudi Arabia, even I am shocked at this barbarism. I mean I know they execute murderers in public, but crucifixion??

When I was a kid we had an American neighbor, tough guy Vietnam vet type who thought it would be cool to watch the ceremonial public beheading. He couldn't even speak of it for days, he was so upset. Can only imagine the ghastly horror of watching a crucifixion of a headless corpse.
