Netcraft Debuts Anti-Phishing Toolbar For IE

British Web monitoring and metrics firm Netcraft has released a toolbar for Internet Explorer that can help people sidestep phishing scams.

British Web monitoring and metrics firm Netcraft has released a toolbar for Internet Explorer that can help people sidestep phishing scams. Dubbed Netcraft Toolbar, the free-of-charge plug-in to Microsoft's popular IE browser uses Netcraft's database of web site information to show several attributes of any visited site, including its country location, longevity, and popularity.

Those reactive features -- most phishing sites are short-lived, for instance, and typically hosted in countries like China and Russia -- are combined with a site blocker of known phishing URLs, said Netcraft, which updates that database with suspicious site reports from users.

"The Netcraft Toolbar provides you with constantly updated information about the sites you visit as well as blocking dangerous sites," the company said in an online tutorial. "The toolbar provides you with a wealth of information about the sites you visit [which] will help you make an informed choice about the integrity of those sites."

The toolbar, which runs on Windows 2000 and XP, currently works only with IE, although Netcraft said it is working on one for Mozilla's Firefox browser. The plug-in can be downloaded from the Netcraft Web site.

Sounds promising. It was also reported on CNET and other technical sites, so it looks legit.

I'll check it out.

Netcraft

Anyone who has further info or has tried it, please post it.

It seems every org is coming out with their own toolbar and desktop search. There is not longer any room for the browser.

lol

The only time I've been hit by spyware was from a Cnet download.

Sounds like Netcraft has made a mod where every URL is bounced off their database before allowing your browser to proceed.

I wonder if this will slow you down your browsing experience?

That's a very good point and observation.

I don't want to have my browser go to their server every time, before it goes where I intend it to.

Couldn't they also have their database downloaded and constantly updating on your computer?

I just looked and the download is 2.5MB.

Man, I not. I was thinking that they might have a local database or file on the clients machine that gets updated occasionally.

I have written some Browser Helpers and the things you can do with them is a little scary.

You might be the right one to ask.

I was daring and downloaded and installed it. It said it was successful, but then when I opened my IE, I got an error: "runtime error 6 overflow", but then it opened my IE and could get on the net. But the Netcraft toolbar didn't show up, so I did the right click on the toolbar to put a checkmark next to it ( because it did show up), then I got another error, that the ActiveX couldn't load the object and 429 in paranthesis (the error code?)

Now I am wondering, whether the problem is with the Netcraft TB, my setting may be set too secure and they won't allow it to do what it's trying to do, or I already have a problem on my computer, which is preventing Netcraft from operating, so I won't know my computer is already hijacked or something.

Any ideas?
