CUDDALORE: Five days after the tsunami wreaked havoc across the coastal region of India, the officials are realising that the number of dead animals - cattle, goats and dogs - in the killer waves are much fewer than perhaps seen in calamities such as cyclones and floods.
"Villagers in this part do not tie their animals. This may have helped them to run away before the waves hit the villages," said an official overseeing the relief work in Cuddalore district.
An interesting theory that is emerging is that the animals sensed the tsunami much in advance and it helped them to run away to safer places.
"My three dogs were barking and howling with no reason at around 7 am on Dec 26. I asked them to keep quiet but they continued barking and were restless," said Fr PA Sampath Kumar of Holy family church at Keezputhupattu about 15 km from Pondicherry.
The first waves of the killer tsunami hit Keezhputhupattu about 8.30 am which was followed by another at 9 am ravaging this fishing village.
"I definitely think that my dogs sensed the tsunami," the priest said.
Interestingly, during the tsunami alert on Thursday, which turned out to be a false alarm, the dogs showed no signs of panic.
"They were absolutely calm as you can see them now," he said and pointed to the three dogs- one a cross breed of British Terrier and two cross breed of Labradors, which were roaming around the church premises, a temporary relief camp now.
The tsunami killed 600 people across 50-55 villages in Cuddalore district and Keezputhupattu. There was hardly any trace of a dead cattle, goat or dogs, said an army jawan involed in removing the debris at the Devanampattinam fishing village where over 100 death were reported.
LOL
I think some people do have a sixth sense. Animals have it to a greater degree because they are wild yet by nature and in their wild state, have to rely on a sixth sense to avoid danger. I had a very pampered poodle who knew when a thunderstorm was coming long before it hit. He was terrified of storms and he would start acting up hours before the storm hit. So did the cat.
To be fair, there were whole villages knocked out not far from the shoreline, but few animal caracssess evidently found. I dunno, I wasn't there, but the reports appear consistent.
I think you are right. My dogs howl at sirens before we ever hear them.
So, the dog receives the speed of sound faster than us ? :-)
You make a good point. I will never forget the first time I hunted (I grew up a city boy) at around 22 years of age. Walking in the field with a gun and dogs alert for rabbits and/or quail, I felt my senses as I had never had before.
Probably but in the case of sirens I think it is the high pitch.
I know dogs have much more sensitive ears. They are terribly frightened of loud noises. That's why one should place their pets in safe places during fourth of July, because of all the fireworks.
I know my dog can pick up approaching visitors long before I could, and I have perfect hearing (just checked).
My dogs are scared of loud noises. They are howling now as I type this and sure enough, an ambulance just went by.
We live in a fairly small town but our property is bordered by a 4 lane highway and a lot of ambulances and police cars go by every day. I'd hate to live in the heart of a big city with dogs.
We've sanitized ourselves down to next to nothing and we have noooo one to blame but ourselves !!
Get out there & brave the elements !
Get out there & Fish like you need it for your next meal to feed your face !
Then come home & re-evaluate your current puh-thetic life !
/Rant off.
animals heard and felt vibrations, sounds not noticed by humans. sometimes it doesn't help them, like when deer run toward a moving car.
I think they just run in a blind panic. Animals do that when they smell smoke from a distant forest fire.
Animals also foretell earthquakes.
I know you don't want to hear it, but the answer is obvious, right there in Genesis.
God created all creatures and I believe He gave each species what they needed to survive and carry on the species.
Except for humans, apparently. Again, the answer is in Genesis. Adam had a connection with God, now look at all the evidence around us that many of us are sadly out of sync with what He's doing.
"Animals also foretell earthquakes."
Eclipses too... Animals are very sensitive to changes in the environment and have a keen sense when things are happening.
I posted a thread 2 days ago about a group of scientists in INdia that foretold the earthquake pretty accurately- if their claims are true. It was tied to the full moon, and the particularly strong tidal forces this month.
The Iranian earthquake also happened on the 26th last year.
Very true. We've taken to trying to create our own destiny.
