animals heard and felt vibrations, sounds not noticed by humans. sometimes it doesn't help them, like when deer run toward a moving car.

I think they just run in a blind panic. Animals do that when they smell smoke from a distant forest fire.

Thought of some other reasons for fewer animals killed. Animals are not usually allowed in beach areas. Animals often can run faster than people.
