MILFORD -- A fisherman found a heavy machine gun on the ice of a creek near Fort Riley, and Geary County sheriff's deputies later found two more.
The three Browning .50-caliber guns were all in working condition, Sheriff's Lt. Sandy Popovich said, but none was loaded.
Sheriff Jim Jensen said he didn't know how the guns got there, and the Army's Criminal Investigation Division is looking into the matter.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns the land, Jensen said, and soldiers from Fort Riley have used it for training. The guns were found in an area accessible to the public.
The guns were turned over to the Army.
Popovich said the fisherman found the first machine gun at about 9 a.m. Wednesday at Madison Creek, about two miles north of Milford.
He gave it to the Geary County Sheriff's Department, which searched the area and found a second gun under the ice and the third in the grass on the creek's bank.
Jeff Coverdale, a Fort Riley spokesman, said no missing weapons had been reported to his office.
Wish I could find a few machine guns........
I wouldn't turn 'em over to the cops, that's for sure.
Good Lord! 3 of them. Unbelievable.
That makes 2 of us!
Yeah, that's what I'd do, yep.
No way I'd want those things around, I'd turn 'em in pretty quick.

Holy smokes! And that's not the s-word that first came to mind.
The M2, Ma Deuce, Browning heavy machine gun. Yes.
Here's a link for you.

This is not something that just falls out of your pocket, and you fail to notice. Something really fishy is going on here.
I would. It sounds like these are not just ditched stolen property. I would want Homeland Security to try to figure out who dumped/placed these and what their plans are.
Besides, really, where would you go shoot them anyway.
I would go shoot mine when comrade weapons confiscator tries to relieve the public of their firearms.
My son's .30 cal slingshot would be referred to as a "machine gun."
I saw this headline while looking for info about another Kansas story.
I was skeptical, thinking "machineguns", eh?
A .50 cal. does qualify, so the headline is correct.
I imagine that some GI is in a world of trouble right about now.
Ha! I used to live in Milford, KS. As a matter of fact it was 28 years ago today that my son was born at Ft. Riley. We didn't leave machine guns lying around in those days!
This sure leads to some interesting suppositions. I would hope the Topeka Capitol Journal keeps up with the story as this is interesting to say the least. I wonder what shape the weapons were in? Any other items like the ground mounts found with them?
