Bush 'Undermining UN with Aid Coalition'
By Jamie Lyons, PA Political Correspondent
United States President George Bush was tonight accused of trying to undermine the United Nations by setting up a rival coalition to coordinate relief following the Asian tsunami disaster.
The president has announced that the US, Japan, India and Australia would coordinate the worlds response.
But former International Development Secretary Clare Short said that role should be left to the UN.
I think this initiative from America to set up four countries claiming to coordinate sounds like yet another attempt to undermine the UN when it is the best system we have got and the one that needs building up, she said.
Only really the UN can do that job, she told BBC Radio Fours PM programme.
It is the only body that has the moral authority. But it can only do it well if it is backed up by the authority of the great powers.
Ms Short said the coalition countries did not have good records on responding to international disasters.
She said the US was very bad at coordinating with anyone and India had its own problems to deal with.
I dont know what that is about but it sounds very much, I am afraid, like the US trying to have a separate operation and not work with the rest of the world through the UN system, she added.
What an idiot - only seeing her precious UN here.
Clare who?
Good, undermine the hell out of them weasels.
Nope... Bush just wants to get the aid flowing, instead of relying on a do-nothing debating society, that has a history (cough .. Annan ..) of corruption when it comes to handling money.
If the aid program is run by the UN, 90% of the money will be skimmed off the top by corrupt staff, leaving only 10% for the affected countries.
WHY WOULD ANY RATIONAL PERSON WANT THE UNITED NATIONS TO RUN ANYTHING?
It is the only body that has the moral authority"
That's funny. I almost had to stop reading when I saw that.
Go George!
It is the only body that has the moral authority
Oh, stuff it you pompous, socialist b****. Does she mean "moral authority" like the Oil for Food or Oil for Sex scandal? Please Bush, disband that bunch of corrupt idiots. I don't want a single nickel of my tax dollars going to that den of thieves again.
I LOVE BUSH !!!!!
The moral suthority of the UN?
Rawanda, Kosovo, Iraq, Sudan.....
"the US is very bad at coordinating with anyone.."
Duh. I guess it means what the definition of "bad" is.
If we can't rake in billions on a humanitarian aid effort for ourselves...yeah, we're 'bad " at that.
The UN is good at coordinating relief efforts...all the way to the bank.
LOL.
Can't wait for the Kerry criticism on this one. Come out of your snake hole, Kerry.
Zimbabwe, Somalia, Biafra, Uganda......there is no end to the savagery committed while the UN looked away.
Any aid money handled by the UN won't reach those who need it. In fact, since the UN IS involved (this astory is outdated), look not only for more complaints that the money isn't reaching those who need it right now, look for stories indicating a sharp upswing in the slave market.
I agree. Moral authority at the UN? To do what? Require sexual favors from those you are supposed to be helping-like in Rwanda?
Sell 'em as sex slaves like they did in Bosnia?
'Bush 'Undermining UN with Aid Coalition'
I would certainly hope so.
Moral authority? What a narcissistic load of doodoo. The only way the UN can function is by playing pattycake with dictators, and trying to strong arm the rest of us.
I suspect the above comment is French in origin. It smells French. Go George go!
