Hooch toll: 75 dead, 80 critical
The Times of India - Mumbai (Bombay) ^ | 12-30-2004 | Staff

MUMBAI: Civic hospitals in the city continued to witness a steady stream of hooch tragedy victims on Wednesday even as the toll surged to 75. Doctors from Rajawadi and Sion Hospital, where most of the victims have been admitted, said that at least 80 persons were still critical. The Rajawadi Hospital authorities reported a total of 183 patients being admitted, of whom at least 49 succumbed to internal haemorrhage caused by the spurious liquor. At least, ten persons were brought dead, late at night on Tuesday, medical superintendent Dr V B Shukla said. At Sion Hospital, six of the 34 victims who were admitted died. The Mumbai police, along with state excise officials, conducted raids at bars serving country liquor in Byculla, Dadar, Sion, Worli and Agripada on Tuesday night. Several godowns on the outskirts of the city were also raided, and manufacturers and suppliers of hooch were charged under the Prohibition Act. "Most of the consumers of this trade are from slums in the central region," said a senior police officer. The supply is mainly from Desai village near Mumbra, Khardi, Mangaon, Diva, Vashi and Koparkhairane. The distilleries are concentrated at Desai village and Selghar near Mumbra. From here, the killer brew is transported in tubes through motor cars or railway locals up to Mumbai. The railway police have also intensified their vigil, and have formed a special squad to monitor the transport of hooch. "We have registered 86 cases of transporting illicit liquor through trains in the past six months," said railway police commissioner Suresh Khopade. The activity is most marked between Virar and Borivli stations. The central region police have arrested five people so far, including main accused Asha Kamble, Laxmiselvam Setiyar, Sunil Khandare, Seema and one Shetty. The state government has already suspended 32 officials, including five from the excise department. On Wednesday, the probe was handed over to the CID with an officer of the rank of additional police commissioner supervising it.

Gee, if only this stuff were illegal, mass deaths like this wouldn't happen... (This is in India.)

Why did God allow this to happen? Should we have a crisis of faith? The media needs to tell me quickly!

"spurious liquor"?

Had some of that in college back in the 60s. Gave me the *trots* for a day, but no death. Yikes!

Y'know, back in the day, when my Caucasian-recyclable ancestors were running shine back up in the hills of Virginia, I don't ever remember anybody actually DYING from the stuff. Unless somebody running from a revenooer ran his car over a cliff, of course.

Was this some sort of particularly bad batch of Mad Cow 20/20 that got out on the streets?

liquor sold without any license or authorised preparation is illegal everywhere ,including in India. Most hooch tragedies result from consumption of distilled methanol-the luckier ones die,the unlucky ones go blind.

Oddly enough, you can use them now. Radiators in most cars are now made of plastic. Dunk one in a barrel of water and you can use it just fine for distilling your moonshine. However, I'd advise buying a new one. It's tough to get all of that antifreeze out of it.

Don't know about AC coils, I would have to agree with TXBSAFH
unused copper coils would be the way to go. That is if someone took it in their mind to manufacture untaxed liquor which would be illegal

Of course, hooch or moonshine is illegal everywhere. I was just wondering why they would bother making it if it was available. Lol, guess I'm just not informed ;-)
