Big Surprise: NYT agrees w/ UN's Jan Egland!
CNN ^ | Thursday, December 30 | NEW YORK (Reuters)

Posted on 12/30/2004 10:49:45 AM PST by NCCarrs

Excerpt from article:

The senior U.N. relief official who chided wealthy Western nations for being "stingy" with their aid was not "misguided and ill informed," as President Bush said on Wednesday, the newspaper wrote.

U.N. emergency relief coordinator Jan Egeland made the statement in reference to general aid supplied by the wealthy countries, but later praised the rapid international response to the tsunami that hit 12 countries Sunday.

The New York Times never passes up an opportunity for America bashing.

My theory? Egland made the comment to get a lot of Americans upset and start thinking, "Oh yeah? We'll show you!" and start donating more. I think it might actually be working too.

Corporate America has already (as of Wednesday) donated $60 million with far more coming.

Starbucks will begin a program on 1/1 that for every cup of a certain kind of coffee purchased, $2 will go to the relief fund.

Pfitzer has given $35 million in goods and services and has some kind of match to corporate giving.

The Red Cross has received millions in donations as of two days ago.

Within 24 hours we had 12 ships on the way to the region (at a cost of millions of dollars a day) to provide help and 90,000 gallons of water a day.

We sent forensic scientists to help identify the dead.

So much for stingy.

Has the NYT called all its reporters and photographers back from vacation? Have any of them started a relief fund? Have any of them decided to forgo their New Year's eve parties in lieu of relief aid? I think not.

Sorry => posted wrong text; following excerpt intended to post:

The Times said: "We beg to differ [with Bush]. Mr. Egeland was right on target."

"But the $35 million remains a miserly drop in the bucket, and is in keeping with the pitiful amount of the United States budget that we allocate for nonmilitary foreign aid.

The Times chided Bush for waiting until Wednesday to express his sympathy to leaders of India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia for Sunday's disaster that has left an estimated 120,000 people dead and millions homeless. The president announced the increase in U.S. aid to $35 million on Wednesday, saying it was "only the beginning."

The NYT failed to mention any figure they may have sent. My guess is zip. The aid we hav sent is a drop in the bucket compared to what citizens will send iondividually, They also failed to mention France sending $136,000 dollars. The NY Time is a POS paper that doesnt deserve to be read.

Eglang meant every word he said. He also said we should have our taxes raised because the U.N. could spend it more effectively in these circumstances.

Typical left-wingers, they think that unless money and aid comes directly from a government agency, then it doesn't count.

Leftists are always very generous with other peoples' money.

How much have Jan Egeland & the staff of the NYT donated?

Not to him though. I think that's why he's so PO'd.

You should always use the correct complete title:

This is just another example of how dim the Dimocrats at the NYT and CNN are.

America is the most generous country in the world. Western NGO's do more good in the world than the UN could ever hope to accomplish.

For example, ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) has pledged $500,000 (1/2 million dollars) for tsunami relief. Most of these donations come from American and European donors. ADRA Tsunami Relief Assistance. Donate here

And the most wonderful thing about the West and our generosity is that ADRA is only ONE of a multitude of NGO's from various religious and secluar missions which are reaching out to the Tsunami victims in their perilous time of need.

This can only happen because our generous spirit hasn't been taxed to death, although there are liberals out there who would love to do just that.

The UN, CNN, NYT have a lot of nerve to call the West "stingy". What chutzpah!
