FReeper New Year's Recipes and Traditions (vanity)
n/a ^ | 12/29/04 | mommadooo

We've had threads for Thanksgiving, Christmas recipes/traditions. It's been this FReeper family sharing the special recipes/traditions of their 'real life' families/heritage.

I know that we have MANY FReepers who come from various ethnic/religious backgrounds. And I thought it would be neat to share the ways we all celebrate New Year's.

Cabbage and corned beef. I have no idea why it is, though.

Growing up in southern AZ we had tameles for New Year's. We bought them from a sweet Mexican lady who, with her six daughters, made heaps and dozens to sell every December. Yummm!

Our New Years traditions include oppressing the poor, ruining the environment, eliminating the middle class, and imposing our religious beliefs on others. And rum-spiked eggnog.

All of our surrounding neighbors and my folks decided to do that in 2000, to welcome in the new century. (They are in the middle of no where)
Well, most of the surrounding neighbors did...one called the sheriff and said there is some shooting going on. He said "is that out of the ordinary?" LOL
Crazy tradition...

My late grandfather used to get drunk on moonshine with his brother, then they would go set off a few sticks of dynamite.
Once he set them off too close to his house and the blast blew out most of the windows on that side of the house.

My grandma was furious. That was the end of the dynamite celebrations.

Boy, he was a character. I miss him.

Want...

In my case, Mom worked hard to create traditions when her family had never had many, I don't think. We usually had ham, and frequently black-eyed peas for luck. But I didn't like 'em back then! They didn't taste like proper beans...

And egg nog! Last day for egg nog, really, so there was always lots.

6 pack, hat, noise makers, confetti, sleep, wait for my daughter's call (2 hours later), sleep.

Irish blessing meal, I think.

Aye. Some of the ancestors were from Ireland. A lot of generations back, though. Thanks.
