Yeah, scared me too. Who pulled the drain on the ocean.
That is one disturbing photo.
Yes, a small cheer in an abyss of despair for me. Thanks
A radio show stated that the uncle of this young boy, Karl Nilsson of Lulo, Sweden, saw this picture and flew to Thailand to ge him and took him home.
I had seen the pic of that poor man and his baby yesterday, so very sad. The heartbreak is incredible.
Ya know, I don't know the position of the camera person who took that picture, but if I were close enough to take that picture, I'd be close enough to throw that damn camera down and help!
Same here.
I know it sounds harsh and insensitive, but there is going to have to come a point when situations like the one depicted in the photo you posted will have to be taken care of with napalm, just to prevent further disease. I suspect we will never know the whole death toll, because there have been so many victims washed out to sea.
I agree 100%.
Marie Gulbstrand from Stockholm said her family found Karl at a shelter. He told her he was in a hotel room with his two brothers when the tsunami hit Sunday. His parents, Thomas and Asa, were outdoors.
Suddenly a torrent of water surged into the room.
"He told me, 'I was under the water but somehow I could breathe. I was just closing my eyes and moving with the waves. Then, suddenly the flood ended and I was in another city,' " Gulbstrand said.
With his family apparently missing, Karl wandered alone until he was helped by some Thai people. A Swedish couple took him to a Buddhist temple, one of many on the island serving as temporary shelters.
"The initial response has been focused on search-and-rescue operations and now, obviously, we need to extend beyond that and look at the needs of those who have survived," said Shantha Bloemen, a communication officer for the UN children's agency in Bangkok.
"This issue of children being left orphaned or even just basically misplaced ... is going to be huge, because they obviously have no form of identification."
Confronted with that problem, staff at Phuket International Hospital posted a picture of a blond-haired, two-year-old boy on the Internet. He had been found on the side of a road after the resort of Khao Lak was torn apart, his face reddened by mosquito bites.
ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES
All hospital staff could determine was that the boy appeared to respond to Swedish. But the posting drew dozens of foreign parents to the hospital, not all of them Swedes, but desperately hoping to find their missing children alive.
Hannes Bergstroem of Goteborg, Sweden, turned out to be one of the lucky ones. His uncle, whom hospital staff would identify only as Jim, arrived Tuesday afternoon and collected the boy after seeing the picture on the Internet.
"This is a miracle, the biggest thing that could happen," Jim said.
Maybe with your instamatic, but with a telephoto lens the position of the photographer could be way past any distance where help could be rendered. If I were you, I would stick to the statement "I don't know the position of the camera person who took that picture" and let it go at that.
You misunderstand. He wasn't talking about energy release, but devastation. The energy release in Hiroshima might have been only one millionth of the release in this earthquake, but there were some 100,000 casualties by the end of the week, putting it in the same ballpark as this tsunami has caused. That's one bomb. A "limited" nuclear exchange would be several bombs, possibly over denser cities than Hiroshima, of which India has several. Maybe not a thousand or even a hundred times worse, but quite possibly many tens of times worse. This isn't about a physics analysis of energy release.
But then, you're not me, are you, smartass!
My God. It is so hard to even understand the scale of 10's of thousands of people lost, but when you see this picture, it shows you what that toll really means. My heart cries out for these folks. This is just a horrible natural disaster.
A few made it to the line of cars at the road...but those few appeared to be the ones in the front from the other pic. They're gone.
