The Vatican newspaper has denounced what it called a decision by the IDF to deny emergency help to disaster victims in Sri Lanka.
Calling for "a radical and dramatic change of perspective" among people "too often preoccupied with making war," L'Osservatore Romano singled out Israeli military leaders for declining a request for emergency medical help.
Contrary to the Vatican report, an Israeli plane carrying 80 tons of food and medical supplies worth $100,000 was set to depart for Sri Lanka Wednesday morning. At the request of the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry, a team of some 150 Israeli medical and security personnel aborted their planned trip to the island nation Tuesday night.
The Vatican paper observed that in what "should be a time for unconditional solidarity," some world leaders seem incapable of escaping a "small-minded approach that restricts their horizons."
The fact that the devastation swept across different societies, cultures, and nations should help to reinforce the universal perspective, the paper suggested. (Jerusalem Post staff and agencies)
Not going to ignore your constant battering of someone you are portraying as being ignorant and using swearwords. I leave to your own self righteous crusade. Bye.
I'd have just deleted the FReepmail. Now I am going to ignore his posts.
"I will post what I read if I can find it."
My info came from aljazera.com, I think.
Shoot! I thought it would be easy to find what I read. Still looking for the piece and will post if I can find it.
That's what the author said:
At the request of the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry, a team of some 150 Israeli medical and security personnel aborted their planned trip to the island nation Tuesday night.
This is a very unfortunate mistake, I think. It seems to me that everyone who reads even the MSM would know that Sri Lanka refused Israel's assistance {which was already packed and ready to fly} due to what they said was unwelcome because there were IDF personel coming with the help.
Nope, that does not mean that it isn't a very popular protestant-type of belief. Lotta people on this board feel that way, but they won't admit it. Its ingrained prejudices, old prejudices that go back to when Spain tried to conquer half the world via papal decree. Prejudices that go back to all the evils your religion has perpetrated. Prejudices that are even now fired by the breaking of the 1st of 10, no other God's before me ~ catholics worship their holy trinity more than God Himself, and the 2nd of 10, false idols, like crosses and beads and statues and all the other catholic mumble jumble. Nope, I don't believe it, but not acknowledging and contradicting the image is a 'stupid thing'.
If you hold me in contempt, that is only fair, and we are equal. You runaway, whine, call names and refuse to acknowledge perceptions and you call me weak, you repeatedly keep sayin' g'bye, yet keep coming back, yet you call me weak. Is it any wonder we have such a low opinion of your catholic rhetoric.
Can you post a link to L'Oservatore Romano. I think they may have an English translation too.
No, y'think?
the V.P. didn't have the luxury of being able to read, and reconsider his language before he hit the "post" button. You had the time to choose your words more carefully, the limited vocabulary comment may have been a bit of hyperbole on my part, but, still you chose to use that word when another would have worked.
Just to be clear, I cuss like a sailor, but not on this board and not in other areas where it is inappropriate and yes, it's something I'm not proud of. Again, if you feel that the rules don't apply to you or are inappropriate, ask the mods to change them.
ROFLMAO! No bias against Israel there.....
Without US leverage the PLO would have been wiped out along time ago and Israel would be feared and respected around the world as they once were.
So you believe that "rules apply to the little people" too?
Sad.
This thread seems to be some sort of weird Twilight-Zonish intersection of colliding worlds...
"because there were IDF personel coming with the help."
I got lambasted for mentioning that the Sri Lankan authorities believed there may have been spies within the IDF personnel. I did not make this up and I did not invent this. It was stated so by Sri Lankan governmental officials. If anyone can help me find the source, I'll be very grateful. In the meantime, I'll continue to search for this piece, which I'm sure I read earlier today.
Spying oh what???
Just come out and say your against Israel. It is your right to say so. I just want to know where you stand on Israel.
I'll help you. The reason from your cited source, alJazeera, who I will state has no pro-Israel bias and would be glad to invent a spying theory if they thought anyone would believe it is. For spying theories, which I've no doubt you can find, you might try Liberty Forum, I'm not going to bother linking from there
Sri Lanka rejects Israels rescue team
"We are not opposed to a plane loaded with medical supplies, food and blankets that will be accompanied by a medical team comprised of 50 IDF people, as the Israeli Foreign Ministry requested in a letter," the Sri Lankan military secretary said in the notice.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Ambassador, Tissa Wijeratne, told reporters: "All our missions have been instructed to accept only supplies as we have been swamped with rescue teams from all over the world".
The aid delegation that had been set to leave for Sri Lanka on Tuesday included medical teams and IDF representatives, who were supposed to provide humanitarian aide to the devastated country and help other organisations in search-and-rescue operations.
"Sri Lanka has asked for only supplies and not for the rescue team and we are extending the same", an IDF spokesperson said. However, a far smaller team, headed by four doctors from Jerusalem's Hadassah University Hospital, landed in Sri Lanka on Monday night. The Israeli team was carrying medicine and baby food.
The doctors - who specialize in rescue operations, trauma and pediatrics asked Israel to send a larger team, such as the one Sri Lanka rejected.
"We will advise Israel and the Foreign Ministry... to send something more massive," said Dr. Avi Rivkind, director of Hadassah's trauma unit.
Israel, however, is sending food and medicine and other supplies to Sri Lanka, including 10,000 blankets, tents, nylon sheeting and water containers.
On Tuesday, the Israeli humanitarian organization Latet said that it was sending a separate aid package on Tuesday. It filled a jumbo jet with about 18 tons of supplies worth $50,000, at Sri Lanka's request. It also said it was considering sending additional supplies in sometime soon.
In Sri Lanka, the death toll from the tsunami had risen to about 19,000 people, including about 200 foreigners.
Daya Ratnayake, Sri Lankan military spokesman said that nearly 1.5 million people had been displaced, about 7.5% of Sri Lanka's population.
So far 70,000 people were 11 South Asian countries on Sunday.
No argument with that sentiment.
They are right in this.
You've lost me here. The Sri Lankans tell the Israelis that their aid personnel are unwelcome, and somehow this is is cause to reprimand the Israelis for their "small-minded approach that restricts their horizons"?
Please clarify.
