HONG KONG - Action star Jet Li injured his foot as he protected his daughter from tsunami waves that flooded his hotel in the Maldives, Hong Kong newspapers reported Tuesday.

Li, who played the villain in 1998's "Lethal Weapon 4," was with his daughter in the hotel's lobby Sunday when huge waves gushed into the hotel, the Apple Daily newspaper reported, quoting a friend vacationing with Li.

He slightly injured his foot while picking up his daughter, the report said. Ming Pao Daily News reported Li struck his foot against a floating piece of furniture.

The death toll across 11 nations from Asia's devastating tsunamis was estimated Tuesday at around 44,000. Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Somalia were among the countries struck by massive waves.

Li made his name in Hong Kong as a martial arts film star before moving on to Hollywood. His screen credits include "Romeo Must Die" and "Hero."

I would have expected noting less from Jet Li. His website's story of his youth is an interesting read.

I thought all Chinese people, especially Kung Fu masters, can fly...

He reached out with his foot, and gave that wave a kick so hard, it knocked the wave back, and it drained the harbor...

J/k.

Um, he picked up his daughter.

In the face of such a horrific tragedy, the media's need to spend time on its impact on celebrities is unfortunate.

No, he saved his daughter. Similarly, if I was ever exposed to mortal danger, I imagine my husband would somehow manage to save me.

So far there are over 50,000 deaths, and no doubt, many more tragedies beyond that. That celebrities are reported is no surprise, we all know of them. They are a part of this unfolding story too. The grandson of the Thai monarch died in the tsunami.

The many thousands who have perished and been injured are unknown to the vast majority of us. How can the news report their story in an individual way? Perhaps through picking representative stories.

If it is so disgusting, why did you click on this thread? If all the people who say the media is awful to focus so much on celebrities stopped reading and watching the media focus on celebrities, the stories would stop.

I imagine many parents were able to save their children. Some were probably only able to save some, and some parent were unable to save any. It seems about every possible scenario has occurred in this tragedy. Nothing wrong with a little good news.

I was hoping to get more info on the situation in the Maldives. I've heard very little other than a report that 2/3 of the capital city was under water? Okay?

I clicked on the thread because of the Freepers who usually bash the idols on the altar of The Cult of Personality.

Jet Li outruns explosions so often, a tidal wave must have been slow in comparison.

Perhaps through picking representative stories.

OK. This is the story of a man who picked up his own daughter as water came rushing into hotel lobby. While it is obviously the right thing to do, it is a wholly unremarkable story other than the fact that this man is some sort of celluloid action hero.

For the record, I don't know Jet Li from Adam's housecat.

Li struck his foot against a floating piece of furniture.

..... while he was busy walking across the water like Chinese secret kung fu masters usually do.

Seriously, good to hear he survived.

Exactly. One of the reasons for mentioning the celebrities is to put a face to the tragedy. Granted, thousands of people have died horribly, but by putting a popular name out there, many people can mentally make the transfer from something "over there," to "some one I know."
