Chennai Port: Damage to Hyundai cars for exports was minimal -- had started process of loading over 1,000 cars when port hit by tidal wave -- ship had to de-berth. Though 10-12 cars' fenders were damaged when they bumped against each other --rest only got soaked. Hyundai officials were double-checking them to make sure there was no damage.

Good one. I'd be howling if I wasn't somewhat numbed by the tragedy.
Were any of the cars SUVs? If they weren't, we've found a link to a conspiracy.
I have heard of cars being dropped into Tokyo bay while being shipped back to the US for U.S. military personnel. Imagine the condition of same after crossing the Pacific -- in the hold of a ship -- while soaked with seawater...
OTOH, I know personally of two families whose 2,000-lb crates of personal "hold baggage" suffered the same fate. You should see a big reel-to-reel tape deck that has 'stewed' in seawater for a couple of months... Yuck!
This causes me to wonder whether stock in CarFax is available to the public.....
The problem with CarFax is that it only lists reported problems. You have to assume that the repair shops doing any work report the problems and that the state any accidents occur in report the accident. Many do not and will not release the accident information. These two factors aside, in theory at least, CarFax can be a valuable tool. At least you get their "warranty" should something slip by them.
Sumptin' tells me these cars will show up squeaky clean! Sea water and electronics do not mix well.

I had a situation with a vehicle and a CarFax report. When I see a post about CarFax I get this urge to share that info. with others.
Although I believe this story means that they only got wet on the outside, even a saltwater bath is no good for metal.
