Its not mist crashing down and running over and off that first (two-story?) building; definitely part of the wave.

Another frequently seen clip showed a pool overrun by a wave, with terrified sunbathers trying to run away. It was shot by a tourist in Sri Lanka, Murray said. Another shot shows a different pool being overtaken by ocean water pouring in from over a hill. Anyone have a link to this one?

I've stayed a couple times at Duangjit Resort at the southern end of your map. Hard to believe something like this could happen.

I've stayed twice at the Expat and the San Sabai Bungalows at the end of the same street.

From multiple stories up in a large hotel, it doesn't look that big. But from ground level? To some poor soul on the beach, that was a two story wave. The worst part of that video is that you know that a lot of people are dying in that wave up and down that beach, in that first street, and in the structures along the beach.
I think that we've been spoiled/corrupted by movies where the waves are always at huge levels.

A tsunami is like snapping a rope. Those in the middle just move up and down and may not even notice it. It's when the wave comes ashore (at the end of the rope) that the damage is done as the wave's kinetic energy is unleashed.
When Hawaii had its last tsunami alert a number of years ago, all ships and boats immediately left port to get to deep water where it was safe. One sight that was impressive to see was all of the Navy fleet in Pearl Harbor steaming out.
That tsunami turned out to be a false alarm, but better safe than sorry.

That's IT !!? BFD !
Worse waves (thousands of them) pounded DAUPHIN ISLAND, ALABAMA during the last hurricane. Where was the UN outrage over the Thai / Indian / Burmese stinginess then ?

It happened on the Indian Ocean side of the Indonesian Archipelago. Those islands and the Malay Peninsula blocked it from affecting the Pacific coasts.
