No they weren’t sent to the camps for being merely Christian. But the Catholics in the south were just about all pretty seriously anti-Communist and for that many Christians got sent to the camps. The few Catholics that remained in the north were not trusted much and their social and economic lives were pretty circumscribed. The new commie government did start to re-educate the Buddhist monks and bonzes, but that didn’t last long. The Buddhists all just sort of went home and poured tea. The country just about stopped and the government declared the traditional Ways, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, to be Vietnamese Cultural Identity and left the Catholic clergy straitjacketed or chased them out of the country. The last anti-Catholic disabilities and rules (there is no Law as we know it in a Communist system)were officially removed last year. Catholics are still not party members but there is no ban on them in the military now.

Vietnamese Communists, with the exception of a small handful of the oldest bosses are not ideological Communists these days. The government of Viet Nam more resembles a mafia organization with a large capable army. In fact, everyone in the government wants to do everything they can to make the Americans protect Viet Nam short of the point at which they lose their jobs. Sooner or later they will lose their jobs. We do need to keep the pressure on. Vietnamese Communists fear China far more than they crave collectivization. The only useful thing Bill Clinton did was open up to Viet Nam. He did it for all the wrong reasons but he did it and the rapid changes taking place in that country now are due to American influence and pressure that were muffled by the barriers before that. All that does not translate into Cuban. Not before the Castros and their whole generation is dead.

Viet Nam still has a hard time with Protestants but that is a cultural problem. Most of the Protestants are Minorities and it is a recent phenomenon with some of the hill groups converting wholesale. The government regards it much the way our own government regarded Ghost Dancing in 1890 and the results have been just as grim. The highland minorities are understood and treated much as we understood the Indians from the late 1880s through WWI. They are on reservations and they don’t stay properly put. The army goes chasing them through the mountains to bring them back. The Protestant phenomenon has the government people bumfuddled. They don’t know how to deal with what seems to be some foreign plot to alienate their “Indians”. It will ease up and the Protestants will be “mainstreamed” in time but there will be a lot of misery inflicted before that time. The pressure from America needs to stay on.
