I think the key word was 'openly'. The MSM is always in denial of their obvious bias, so it isn't 'openly' bias.

The writer forgets one important point: If Rather had just been truthful, no blog on earth (or online) would have been able to trip him up.

This should be pursued aggressively. LOL! Famous last words!
What's funny is looking at those idiots over at DU. They all want to be Buckhead -- almost all the posts are along the lines of "didja notice (enter conspiracy theory item here).. this should be looked into..."
Funny stuff!

Powerline gave it legs, though. I think it is the cross linking feature of the blog format that is so powerful. We tend to stay here on FR. When we want to get the word out, what do we do? Post to the blogs and email Drudge and then send the links to all of our entire lists.
I always think of FR as a wire service because we usually have on site FReepers reporting immediately during any event. The blogs, cable/sat TV, and talk radio use us for prep. But, like it or not, we need the dissemination facilities of the rest of the new media to get a story noticed and out there.
However, in the beginning, there is always Howlin's ping list < G >!

I suppose the editors at Time asked around to see which of their writers were most familiar with the internet, and the ball went to Lev Grossman. So he went out and interviewed the people at the blog he had heard about, or was told about.
He's done a bit of homework here, but he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. Matt Drudge's website is NOT a blog. FR is not a blog. And Powerline was one of a number of sites that brought this story out over the course of that day and the following weeks. Little Green Footballs was very important.
FreeRepublic was, of course, the first. And there were some important observations by typography specialists and many others.
I doubt if he really thinks that blogs are opinionated and the MSM is not. In other words, he's a liar on that issue.

In complete agreement! "Bravo Zulu's" to those superb gents who were at the forefront of the "New Roman --9 Point" Massacre!
I was lucky enough to be up late that night, and on-line here -- and watched (in living color *S*) the unfolding of the CBS Rather Fraud. It was the highpoint of my year -- bar none! I shall never forget the experience.
Well Done, Freepers!

Not true at all. FR is read by people at Fox, by people like Limbaugh, Culter, and Malkin. I think there were a few articles were in newspapers like the Chicago Tribune(?) the next morning based mostly on Buckheads post. Powerline added much to back up Buckheads point, but Buckhead breif response was enough to show the memos were bogus. FR is the most visible and powerful news forum on the net.

I actually have wondered why the formatting errors weren't given more prominence in the argument that the memos were faked. It is irrefutable. The memos, which were supposed to have been written in 1972, were in a format that the USAF didnt adopt until 1992. The memo formats or 1972 and 2004 are VERY different.

"Blogs are just too different, too weird, to become wholly mainstream. For starters, they're too cheap, too easy and too loud."And the internet is too chaotic.
The only way the "Mainstream Newsmedia" can dominate the internet is through government regulation.

I think the Powerline guys are great and I'm sure Buckhead would want no more attention, but the REAL new powerhouse media is right here, in the form of FR. I agree. We were ten hours ahead of them!
