LONDON (Reuters) - Looking for a last minute Christmas gift? Think goat!
You will pay 24 pounds ($46) for a goat or 10 pounds for a brood of chickens, tell a friend or relative that this is their Christmas present, and it will be sent to a Third World family to provide milk, meat, manure and offspring for trade.
People have bought 31,000 goats and 500,000 chickens under the scheme set up by the international aid agency Oxfam, not to mention 650,000 tree seedlings to provide wood and shade and prevent soil erosion. Other aid agencies have similar projects.
"Not only do people like the idea of giving something so unusual at Christmas, but you can also see how a goat, chicken, bike or midwife will make a difference to a person struggling against poverty," Oxfam manager Douglas Graham said.
But my redheaded son called me a name when I pointed it out to him.
There's an African market near my apartment that specializes in Goat meat. I do know that roasted Kid is a specialty in northern Mexico and southern Texas.
Ewww!
Red hair and freckles rule.
There was a thread this morning, postulating that Jesus was a redhead.
Maybe they do rule.
World Vision has a dairy goat donation program that I've donated to. I have a pox curse on Oxfam, a group I regard as bunch of marxist underlings.
Goat milk is WAY better than cow's milk in so many ways. Makes a good lawnmower too :-)
bah, humbug. humbug, sez I!
heh!
Most exotic food I ever ate was alligator (it tasted like chicken, I swear!). I passed on the calves brains when I was at a French restaurant a few years back. I don't regret it.
The "chupacabra" loves cabrito. so do I! Done over a Mesqite wood fire, like they do it in Nuevo Laredo, Washed down with Dos Equs. Now I have to make a run for the border pretty soon.
Hey, Cyborg, Merry Christmas!
I haven't had goat's milk (not a milk person), but have you had curried goat? There must be a few Carribbean places up in NYC that sell it. My step father's people are from the islands, now mostly settled in the Miami area, so I had my share of this kind of food growing up. A little goat, a little curry, a little conch, maybe some jerked chicken, pigeon peas and rice... Them's eats!
I'm in the kitchen and there's about twenty pounds of seasoned pork waiting to be stewed on the counter! LOL Conch and jerk chicken? Was he from Jamaica?
I don't have green eyes. Instead I have something very rare for a red head, dark brown eyes. Over the years this has caused surprised reactions from people who have never seen this combination before.
I have a very naughty fantasy with all four of these elements.
But who doesn't?
You wanna hear weird?
I have two left eyes.
No kidding. I have to admit, I would do a double-take.
In a jar? sell them on e-bay.
