ARTICLE SNIPPET: "KARACHI: Recent attacks on Christians and Westerners in Pakistan were part of a coordinated campaign by Pakistani Islamic militant groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Taliban, The Washington Post said on Saturday, quoting military and security sources.
Hours after a grenade attack on a chapel at a Presbyterian hospital killed three people on Friday morning, top security aides to President Pervez Musharraf told him they had intelligence reports that factions of at least two banned Pakistani groups had joined forces for attacks on Westerners and Christians, senior officials familiar with the briefing said.
Security officials said that the top leaders of the banned groups, Harkat ul-Mujahideen and Jaish Muhammad, voluntarily informed Pakistani intelligence officials that some of their trained elements had broken ranks to form anti-Christian, anti-West strike groups.
A full-fledged local Al Qaeda is now active in Pakistan, a security official said. We have got it from the horses mouth.
Harkat ul-Mujahideen and Jaish Muhammad are two of the most prominent Pakistani Islamic militant groups supporting a 13-year-old guerrilla war in the divided region of Kashmir that is aimed at ending Indian rule there."
Good find.
U.S., Iraqi Officials Fear 'Spectacular' Attacks
BAGHDAD, Iraq A U.S. general and Iraq's interim leader offered separate warnings about the very real prospect that more deadly attacks would come before the Iraqi elections on Jan. 30.
"I think a worst case is where they have a series of horrific attacks that cause mass casualties in some spectacular fashion in the days leading up to the elections," Air Force Brig. Gen. Erv Lessel told The Associated Press in an interview Friday.
