The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

WASHINGTON - A terrorist attack on a tanker loaded with liquefied natural gas could cause massive damage a third of a mile away and could send a vapor cloud billowing more than 1.5 miles, government scientists say.

With the the nation clamoring for more natural gas, policy-makers are trying to figure out how to safely import large quantities of liquefied natural gas or LNG.

DUBAI (Reuters) - An audio tape purportedly from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) has urged Iraqis to boycott January parliamentary elections, Arabic Al Jazeera television said on Monday.



Shortly before airing the tape, the television said bin Laden backed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the Islamist network's leader in Iraq (news - web sites).

Earlier this month, an audio tape purportedly from bin Laden urged militants to concentrate their attacks on Iraqi and Gulf oil facilities, saying it was the most powerful weapon against America.

After that tape was posted on the Internet, an intelligence official in Washington said an analysis had determined with "high confidence" that the tape contained the voice of bin Laden.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The Arabic-language satellite television channel al-Jazeera said Monday it had received a new audiotape in which Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden appeared to call on Iraqis to boycott the upcoming elections.


Al-Jazeera had not yet broadcast the audiotape, but said the voice proclaimed Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (search) as his deputy in Iraq.


Al-Zarqawi, at one time seen as a potential rival to bin Laden for the leadership of the international jihad movement, declared his allegiance to the former Saudi citizen several months ago and renamed his Monotheism and Holy War (search) group "Al Qaeda in Iraq.""

The second - supporting protests in Saudi Arabia and calling for attacks on SA's oil infrastructure were met by a woeful response. This one - may have the best chance, but is still an underdog of achieving his ends.

Funny to see anyone in Iran speaking critically of "Big Brother".

Despite all the efforts, many pages have not vanished from the worldwide web, but reemerge on a regular basis under new addresses. Most of the providers are not able to control the contents of the websites of their many customers. Often, private individuals are responsible for the websites being shut down. They feel that it is their moral obligation to discover the sites and investigate who publishes them, where the server is located, and which company made the contract with the publisher. Then they mobilize like-minded people and send a hail of protest mail to the public and responsible persons and call them personally on the phone in the hope of getting the sites shut down.



On the frontline there is a U.S.-based website called www.haganah.net. Haganah is Hebrew and means defense. This project, financed entirely by donations, lists the latest Islamic sites and links, including the data on the publishers which they believe are preaching hatred and violence. On the other hand, the ones disseminating such content play cat and mouse with the authorities, whose work often turns out to be difficult because most of the sites are in Arabic, which means they must hire expensive and loyal translators.


Most of the websites under surveillance are run by groups which are on the U.S. government's terrorism blacklist or belong to supporters of blacklisted groups. It is not surprising that most of the groups on the list are Islamic. These websites are used for different purposes. Mainly they serve to publish news about combat areas like Afghanistan, Iraq, or Palestine. They also provide ideology and background information to interested people. In addition, material is presented which is meant to lower the morale of the enemy. This is called psychological warfare.
