My husband brought me some glasses he got from when he had cataract surgery.
It's warm here and I slept with the windows open and was awakened by sirens around 4:00 am and have been up ever since. I made tea and went outside for a while, listening to the sirens. Finally turned on the television and when I heard what was going on, even before they warned people about the dangers of a leak, I closed the windows and closed all the vents and closed blinds and drapes.
I took a shower as soon as I heard about the chemical leak (there are three chemicals that are leaking, the worst of which is 90 tons of concentrated chlorine) and washed my hair and changed clothes.
Governor reports dead animals, fish and at least one body lying outside a house. We're under a state of emergency and strongly encouraged to stay home.
I feel quite calm and safe although my eyes are burning. I am alternating eye drops, cold compresses and now have full surround glasses over my eyes. No one else's eyes seem to be affected in my neighborhood.
I don't know where the governor was reporting from...it looked like somewhere in Aiken which is about 5 miles away.
They have talked about low lying areas where the gas has settled so perhaps he was in a higher area.
Saudi Arabia's Terror Conference: Part I
By Steven Stalinsky
FrontPageMagazine.com | January 6, 2005
Since 9/11, the Saudi royal family has spent millions of dollars to improve its image worldwide. This includes a recent ad campaign in The New Republic, which are Sponsored by the People of Saudi Arabia Allies Against Terrorism. Another full-page ad appeared in USA Today, stating, For far too long, rumors have been accepted as truth The 9/11 Commission Report finally reveal[ed] the facts. However, despite the Saudi PR efforts, which claim that the report completely vindicates Saudi Arabia, it in fact states that Saudi Arabia is "a problematic ally in combating Islamic extremism" and that "significant problems remained" regarding its role in the war against terror.

Sounds like you have it all covered, Peach. :-)
I have to run and do car-pool now, so I'll check back with you later.
Stay safe.
THANKS PEACH for posting that link.
HazMat teams are finally moving into the area. Thus far they have only been treating people who came to the staging area.
The concern is that as night falls, the air gets heavier and the chlorine will be pushed down to the ground and blanket the area.
OMG!!!
After seeing a picture of this 4,000 lb. buoy....I was hoping that someone would have the sense to test for explosives; or at least make sure that it was really safe to let it lie on the beach.
We just got an automated phone call from EMS telling us to stay indoors. Better late than never I guess :-)
Peach....it might be a good idea to have a quick bag near the door, packed with personal essentials.....just in case they determine that they need to evacuate, within a certain square mile area from the derailment site.
That's an excellent idea. They are evacuating 5,400 but within a 1 mile area of the crash site; we're about 5 miles from it.
I'll go pack a little bag of necessities and cash, etc., right now.
I do, but links go up and down, so will add your links too to my collection.
THANK YOU Velveeta.
...and your windows are closed....how are you feeling?
Yep, that's a very good idea.
Boston - 223 Cambridge St - Manhole explosion, Fire Department required for trafffic control 15:57
Boston - Fairfield at Newbury - Manhole explosion Fire Department required 15:27
New York Queens - 64 St. X 39 Avenue - Numerous manhole explosions shattering bldg. windows 11:32
The windows have been closed since early morning when I realized what had happened.
They are saying it's safe for people to walk to their cars and get away but come nightfall, it will not be safe because the chemicals will be pushed to the ground with the heavier air.
We're safe where we are - 5 miles away - but I still won't open the windows. It's mild out so we don't need heat or air.
Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Thanks for the updates.

Ridge: U.S. sees lull in terror 'chatter'
1/6/2005, 4:03 p.m. ET
By LARA JAKES JORDAN
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) U.S. intelligence monitors are picking up less terror threat talk than a year ago, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Thursday.
A variety of factors could be contributing to the lull, Ridge said, and he warned that terrorists "are strategic actors and long-range planners" who could be merely lying low before striking again.
"There certainly is a diminution, reduction in the amount of intelligence, and the decibel level is lower," Ridge told reporters, comparing information picked up over the past several months to the similar period a year ago.
Ridge offered no single explanation for the drop, saying it could be stepped-up U.S. efforts to boost security, increase military action, disrupt terrorist leaders and their finances or, simply, the "hardening of America."
"Could be any of those and none of those," he said. "I suspect it's probably all of them."
