I'm still several hundred posts behind and reading frantically to catch up, but I had to comment on this re: cross-infections between humans and animals. New Year's Day I had to take my 1-year-old Schipperke to the emergency vet with a nasty eye infection, sneezing, & congestion. I started to get sick New Year's night, went down-hill from there and went to the emergency room myself Monday night, fearful I had pneumonia. Turns out I have a nasty case of bronchitis with secondary sinus infection. The dog is much better after antiobiotic ointment for his eyes, but I'm on antibiotics for 14 days. I found the timing to be strange.
I was on a "business" trip to deliver new nuclear planning software to SHAPE (NATO) in 1992. The company put me up at a nice hotel called "The Moathouse". It is a couple miles from SHAPE. A buffet breakfast is included in the daily lodging fee. Imagine my surprise when the breakfast dining room was full of Russian officers in dress uniforms. I was greatful to be dressed in ordinary clothing so I didn't "stand out".

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Thu Jan 06 2005 01:41:15 GMT-0800.
Israel, the West Bank and Gaza
January 5, 2005
This Public Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to security concerns during the upcoming Palestinian elections, especially in the West Bank and Gaza. This Public Announcement expires on January 18, 2005.
In light of the existing travel warning and the continuing unsettled security situation in the West Bank and Gaza, the Department of State remains concerned for the safety of Americans traveling in the West Bank and Gaza and continues to warn U.S. citizens to depart Gaza immediately and to defer travel to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. We are particularly concerned that some Palestinian extremist elements, especially in Gaza, may attempt acts of violence against international election observers in an effort to undermine the Palestinian Authoritys ability to conduct free and fair elections on January 9, 2005. American citizens are urged to carefully review the existing travel warning for those areas.
Current information on travel and security in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza are available at http://travel.state.gov. This website lists: the Travel Warning for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza; the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement; the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement; and the Consular Information Sheet for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. U.S. citizens may also call the Department of State at 1-888-407-4747 within the United States, or, from overseas, 1-317-472-2328. The U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv may be reached at (972) (3) 519-7355 and the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem at (972) (2) 622-7250.

"Palestinians Using More Children, Women for Terrorism"
By Julie Stahl
CNSNews.com Jerusalem Bureau Chief
January 06, 2005
So sorry to hear about Aunt Clara's passing. Prayers for her soul and your loss.
All this talk about laser pointers. Last summer I was hangin out with some neighbors outside. The neighbors cat was laying on the grass when I noticed a red laser dot on him.
Myself, the neighbor guy, his wife and newborn were right next to this cat with the red dot. We all saw the dot but nobody except me showed any concern.
We were in a place surrounded by trees. The position of the dot on the cat indicated the source could only have come from one direction and I couldnt see anyone there. After trying to pinpoint the source I looked at the cat and the dot was still there.
The dot was dead still, like the source was on a tripod or something.
Hind sight is 20/20 I know.
I was disturbed later about this, thinking that it could have been more than just a laser pointer. Maybe a laser sight. Would have called the authorities if I knew just six short months ago what I know now!
