WA Gov. Race: Gregoire Speaks Out About Hand Recount
KOMO-TV ^ | 20 December 2004 | George Howell

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:22:09 AM PST by Publius

Republicans and Democrats didn't take the day off Sunday in the state's hotly contested race for Governor.

The war of words continued from the Rossi campaign, Christine Gregoire, and from protesters from both sides of the issue in Bellevue.

Nothing can really happen until the state's Supreme Court decides whether hundreds of mistakenly rejected ballots from King County will count in this election. That is supposed to happen Monday.

On Sunday, everyone involved in this fight came out swinging.

It's people like Jack Oxford who consider themselves the wildcards of this election. He is one of the hundreds of voters in King County whose vote did not count.

"The fact that I've been disenfranchised because of a clerical error is astounding and very, very scary" he said. "It could happen to anybody!"

Oxford joined dozens of other people, protesting in front of the Rossi Headquarters in Downtown Bellevue. Most of the democrats protested on one corner, and republicans stood ground on the other.

Christine Gregoire said "these people, democrats and republicans alike, are entitled to have their votes counted."

Gregoire came out Sunday, accusing the Rossi campaign of creating wild accusations to prevent hundreds votes from being counted.

"The candidates in particular need to stop the games, stop the rhetoric, get the lawsuits over with, count every legitimate ballot, and live by the result," she said.

The democrat's lawsuit was scheduled to goes before the state supreme court Monday. They're fighting to have the 723 ballots that were mistakenly rejected – counted in the hand recount.

Chris Vance, with the Washington State Republicans say the mistake never became "a problem," until the chairman of the King County Council realized his vote was among those that didn't count.

"These are ballots that have not had a signature problem for a very long time. The county has been working to try and find these signatures and have been unable to. Now they are desperately trying to find these signatures. Why? Because Larry Phillips and Christine Gregoire are pressuring them to do that, I believe."

King County elections officials deny any political motivation behind what they are strictly calling a mistake.

Dean Logan with King County elections told KOMO 4 news just because they made a mistake, it should not prevent certain votes from being counted.

I don't know. There are cable TV services in Washington, such as NWCN and TVW, that might broadcast this. I'm cubicle-bound so I'll be in the dark until one of regular news outlets goes public with it.

I would agree with her...accept she isn't counting HER games, rhetoric, lawsuits, etc. Every legitimate ballot has been counted, TWICE. I do not consider those ballots "found" after the election was over and certified as being legitimate.

What is the chain of custody on each of these disputed ballots? Can the dems prove that the ballots were not created after the election? If the dems miraculously "win" this election based upon found ballots, the GOP needs to assure that there are sufficient demonstrators to shut the government down until democracy is restored. They might try wearing orange like the opposition in the Ukraine.

Why would ANYONE vote for this hypocrite?

Because she's a Democrat. That's the only reason people voted for her, and she ran far behind Kerry and Murray.

whether they add in the "found" votes or not, Gregoire will win. Simple mathematics. Not to mention "King Co. mathematics".

Dang, I saw Gregoire's name and I thought for a second that she was writing a $19,000,000 check to reimburse the taxpayers of Washington for her gross negligence. Oh well.

I would like to see the randomness of these voter names in terms of signature rolls.

What is the % of these alleged ballots that end up being DEMOCRAT votes that also just happen to be at the end of the rolls?

I do not consider those ballots "found" after the election was over and certified as being legitimate.

But the UNBIASED reporter goes out of his way two or three times to subtly call them "mistakenly" rejected ballots. We know the members of the media never lie or stretch the truth . . . right?
