GOP senators defend Rumsfeld
Washington Times ^ | Monday, December 20, 2004 | By Audrey Hudson

Key Republican senators and a top White House official yesterday said they have confidence in Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and dismissed Bush administration critics who suggest the Pentagon chief should resign.
On NBC's "Meet the Press," Sens. John W. Warner of Virginia, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, and Richard G. Lugar of Indiana, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, pledged their support and willingness to work with Mr. Rumsfeld.
"We're at war. We should not at this point in time entertain any idea of changing those responsibilities in the Pentagon," Mr. Warner said.
"We're going to go through this [Iraq] election. We're going to have a tough period after that election. And we should express our confidence in the commander in chief and his principal subordinates," Mr. Warner said.
Mr. Lugar said Mr. Rumsfeld should stay in office but be held responsible for his actions.
"We have to hold accountable the secretary of defense and those who are responsible. Maybe we should be more vigilant and outspoken, and probably we all will be, because this is crucial in terms of the safety of our troops," Mr. Lugar said.
White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. appeared on ABC's "This Week" and said, "Secretary Rumsfeld is doing a spectacular job, and the president has great confidence in him."
Democrats and some Republicans criticized Mr. Rumsfeld for his Dec. 8 answer to a question posed during a visit to Kuwait by Tennessee National Guard Spc. Thomas "Jerry" Wilson, about equipping vehicles with armor.

Does anyone remember Lugar or McCain raising hell about Clinton's eight year reign over military cutbacks?

"Democrats and some Republicans criticized Mr. Rumsfeld for his Dec. 8 answer to a question posed during a visit to Kuwait by Tennessee National Guard Spc. Thomas "Jerry" Wilson, about equipping vehicles with armor."

Democrats pick any excuse to criticize the Bush administration. The Republican senators that are jumping on the Rats bandwagon are just plain disloyal and stupid.

Rumsfield does not get into details of logistics. He expects the commanders in the field to make sure their subordinates get things done. Glitches are part of the military. Do you remember in Glory when the supply Lt. would not release shoes to the troops, because he was a bigot? That same kind of thing still goes on.

For instance, the West Pointers still look down on the reservists and national guard. It still looks to me like the situation is much improved over Nam.

Anyone in the states where your senator or rep is a Rep. and railing against Rumsfield should call their office and tell them to shut up. We can't change one of the best SECDEFs in the middle of a war, a war where we are not losing that many troops.

Heck, we only lost 5000 a year in Nam. In WWII, which is what the war on terror equates to, we lost 10 or 20k in one battle.

The continual carping by the Dems is rank hypocrisy, since they don't have a clue how to run the military and are against every war we have had to fight, except bombing aspirin factories while an intern is under the Pres. desk.

Warner's comment was kind of strange. Conceited? "I have confidence in myself and ...."

Good point. What the heck were we doing?

It came back to haunt us. The muslims use us to fight their wars, but don't give us any credit for it and try to destroy our way of live to boot.

It's about friggin' time someone defended Rummy from the second guessers! What we have done in 3 years years is nothing short of spectacular. Defeated the Tali-ban in Afghanistan, held democratic elections in Afghanistan with 40% of the vote coming from women who are voting for the first time and defeated Saddam in short order with elections to be held soon. The terrorists still left in Iraq will ultimately be put down either by arrest or KIA.
Lugar and McCain are more full of crap than a Christmas Turkey. It's congress's role to fund the military and have oversight on how the money is spent. If anyone dropped the ball, it was congress who did the dirty deed. From everything I have read we are adapting our spending and manufacturing of defense items in a very timely way in regards to the terrorists actions. MSM trolling for anything to hurt the administration.

Would. . .Brit Hume. . .Fred Barnes. . .go there? Reminding these fools where they were NOT; just a few years ago.

ANYone; besides say. . .Rush and the nasties on talk radio?

Wish GW would have a press meeting and announce ONCE and for ALL; that we are NOT at war against the Pentagon (despite McCains plans) and that Rumsffeld STAYS.

Imagine if the heat were this high under Kofi. . .these folks could actually be a force for good. . .

Warner is strange, but he did have Liz Taylor for awhile when she was still pretty hot, so he must have something going for him. What exactly I have no idea.

A Senator called someone else conceited? Is he worried that a Beltway outsider is muscleing in on his territory?

"The whole mess was a European creation that didn't affect us in the least. "

The Europeans didn't show much gratitude, either.

"Evil reveals itself by who and what it supports. " . . .

Very true. . .though we do not always recognize the 'who' and the 'what.

Evil cannot travel with just any horse. . .it must have a 'good horse to ride on' - because everybody recognizes and appreciates a good horse.
