Schrock, 63, a two-term Republican from Virginia Beach, has agreed to become staff director of a subcommittee of the House Government Reform Committee, other staffers confirmed Friday. Fellow Virginia Rep. Tom Davis offered Schrock the job. Davis represents the states 11th District in Northern Virginia and chairs the committee.
Schrock served on Government Reform and two of its subcommittees as a House member. Neither he nor Davis could be reached Friday for comment on Schrocks new job.
The Government Reform Committee oversees the administration of federal agencies and handles legislation relating to pay and benefits for federal workers. It currently has seven subcommittees. An aide said that Davis has not decided which subcommittee Schrock will work under.
Schrocks salary in his new job also has not been set; in the House, each committee chairman establishes staff pay levels. Subcommittee staff directors on Government Reform made between $115,000 and $120,000 this year. As a congressman, Schrock earned just over $158,000 this year. A retired Navy captain, he also receives a military pension.
Schrocks House term expires in early January, but with Congress having adjourned for the year, his Washington and Virginia Beach congressional offices already have closed.
Thelma Drake of Norfolk, a Republican serving in the state House of Delegates, won the November election for the 2nd District seat. Shell be sworn in Jan. 4 as Schrocks successor.
Schrock was a prohibitive favorite to win a third term representing Virginia Beach, the Eastern Shore and much of Norfolk until an Internet site run by a homosexual rights activist in Washington published allegations in August that the congressman had used a telephone bulletin board service to solicit sex with men.
Schrock has refused to discuss the matter in public but announced in late August that he would retire from the House because his campaign for re-election would inevitably be overshadowed by the allegations.
Tom Gordy, his former chief of staff, confirmed Friday that Schrock was hospitalized for some time after his retirement announcement. He hadnt eaten. He hadnt slept. He looked terrible, Gordy said.
Schrock returned to work after several weeks but kept a low profile.

I remember when this story broke - was this activist ever "outed"?
I don't know. To my knowledge, Schrock never spoke about the allegations. Schrock used to call in to a local radio station every Thursday and chat with the host and take questions from callers. He declined the request of the host to appear on the show after the story broke.
