From the 1997 dedication of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial The emotional high point of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial dedication was reached when Frieda Mae Green Hardin, a 101-year-old World War I veteran, standing with her 73-year-old son, and retired Navy captain, addressed the crowd of more than 30,000 and left them on their feet and cheering. She looked over the assembled throng and closed her remarks saying, "It is not likely that I will be meeting with you again, so I bid each of you a fond farewell." A MUST READ - Tribute

Me too! I went to Charleston on business and ended up staying four extra days on my own dime, I fell in love with the place. I can't wait to go back, next time I want to see the plantations on the Ashley and the Hunley. Great people, too.

It is a favorite of mine. Recorded when he was much younger and still "hungry" if ya get my drift. He just plain sounded great!

Of course, I look better than he does, these days, anyways.

RIP, Frank.

stand watie,

The Sailor is picking out a movie. So? I will answer you:

damnyankees are persons, who were not only born in the north, but also despise the south, her battleflags, her dixie hero-martyrs,her war memorials, her culture, her institutions & her PEOPLE.

My people are American. They hail from across this great country. Many I agree with. Many I do not. I find that just as many people who love to fly the flag of Dixie seem to have problem with those flying the flags of the country origin of many other Americans. To me, the Stars and Stripes makes every other flag flying in this country--ugly as hell.

in short, they despise SOUTHERNERS and see us as INHERENTLY inferior, ignorant, inbred, stupid & beyond redemption. imVho, people are NOT born with such hateful prejudices, they LEARN to hate.

I grew up in Southern Ohio with many rednecks to boot. Many of those folks are kindred spirits, but a few were not. They would use racial epitaphs to get their point across. They would fly the Confederate flag in my face. It's a piece of cloth. It has no power over me. It took me awhile to catch on that not all folks that fly the Confederate flag were racist. Those few that did that were trying to teach me something. Most people in America aren't racist or hateful towards a particular region. Why? They have better things to think about and do. They've got kids to raise, mortgages to pay, and futures to plan. And we have terrorists to deal with. On September 11th, I noticed that those terrorists wanted to kill EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US. They don't care where we hail from, what our ethnicity, or what our excuse is...they just want to kill us. Nothing terribly scientific about that.

it is my belief if they didn't hate the south & southerners, they would HAVE to see themselves as being BETTER than/superior to some other group. i believe it is a LEARNED character flaw, which is NO different than racism or Antisemitism.

Discrimination is absolutely wrong in any case. I would like to point out that it is easier to spot a person like Mojo than it is a Southerner. Southerners choose to show their pride.. Mojo has no choice at what I am. I am brown and there's no getting around it. There's no need for a pity party for MoJo. I'm doing just fine anyways. I can overcome any person because I've learned there's only one that counts. The good Lord has put up with a lot of my foolishness and still I live. Amazing, huh?

HANOI-John Kerry is the prototypical damnyankee = arrogant, self-righteous,deceitful,dis-honorable,self-serving & mean-spirited. (BUT he was NOT as smart & superior as he, the mainSLIME media & the northeastern elitist LIBs thought he was, as we southerners saw right through him to be a HOLLOW man right to the EMPTY core.)

John Kerry couldn't relate to nearly 62 million people in America. Not all of them are Southerners and probably most of those folks felt that he was a bit condescending. As someone who hails from the Midwest, I can absolutely relate to not liking what John Kerry was about. President Bush was born in the same parts as JFK. His parents hail from the same parts as JFK, but yet they managed to be really good people. What is my point? That the hatred and bias goes both ways in this country.

the whole nation should be glad we southerners DID understand the real Kerry, otherwise in about a month we'd be stuck with JFK for at least four years!

It wasn't the South that saved America from JFK. It was Ohio. And from this Buckeye to you--You are quite welcome. You aren't worthy of it, but we still pulled it out for you.
Ohio has lost a lot of jobs and that could have really hurt President Bush. In the end, the people of Ohio decided that we needed a decisive person.

The best flag this country will ever fly is the Stars and Stripes.
The best thing to ever happen to me was being born here.

I've been raised outside of America and I can tell you that it isn't much fun sometimes. The people don't really understand or can't relate to you. I've found as I've traveled this country that people are as kindred as you allow them to be.

Good night everyone!

dear sw, checked it out your summary of damned yankee--I know the type of person you are talking about. the woman i went to Charleston with (work colleague, not my choice) was like that, always criticizing and making fun of the south. it got so I would sneak out to dinner early, so i didn't have to go with her. met a lot more locals that way and had a much better time!
