But Mandrake 10.1 is easier to install and is a more comfortable conversion for a new user migrating from windows, especially the default desktop KDE, while giving the users a full, and fully compliant, linux system.
I have been using Eudora continuously for years through all the upgrades. At one time I purchased the Pro version, but with free Eudora I didn't see the need to keep purchasing it. The modest advertisements do not bother me and, occasionally, I even click on an ad of interest. Qualcomm has hit on an excellent advertising model here. If I go to look at something, I am genuinely interested in it.
I currently have several thousand messages in my inbox dating back to March of '98. I also run Norton anti-virus. Over the years I have had virtually no problems with Eudora.
You did not say what operating system you are using. I am using Windows XP Pro. I would start by making sure I had downloaded all the latest service packs and bug fixes from Microsoft. If you are not using XP or Windows 2000, you might seriously consider upgrading. Also, make sure you have plenty of ram. These days, you need a minimum of 500 megs.
Other than that, I don't know what else to recommend. Good luck.

Nice thing about Linux.... you're not locked into any single distrobution. =)
A friend of mine does Gentoo.... and I think he's nuts.
After you download and install Firefox, don't try to use it immediately! Don't even try to access any of the menus. You may experience program freezes, your computer may hang, and you may even need to reboot. (All of that happened to me, but it's easily avoidable.)
The very first thing you should do, after installation, is create a new "User Profile" (I assume this is so that Firefox doesn't have to share such files with your other browser). This website tells you what you need to know:
How To Manage Profiles. Follow those instructions, then start up Firefox again and use it fearlessly. It should run just fine. I wish I knew about this "User Profile" stuff months ago. I also wish that the installation routine took care of it for you, but alas, it's something you'll just have to do for yourself. (If it is an installation option, I must have missed it.)
Next, you'll want to import your bookmarks. Under the "File" menu you'll see "Import" as one of the options. Do what it says. Once you have your old bookmarks imported into Firefox, you can re-arrange them as you like by going to the "Bookmarks" menu and selecting the "Manage Bookmarks" option. It took me a while to move them all out of the unnecessary "Imported from Mozilla" directory that the import process creates, but that's how I prefer it.
Now visit the "Tools" menu and select "Options." Visit all of the locations listed (as silly icons) along the right side of the "Options" window. This is where you set the browser to block popups, use tabs, etc.
That's pretty much all you need to do. Everything else (themes, etc.) may be interesting, but none of that is required. However, you may consider these additional items:
If Adobe Reader doesn't work when you're visiting a PDF site, the solution is here: Firefox's support forum's info about Adobe.
Finally, if you want to speed things up, visit this FreeRepublic thread and do what the lead article suggests. It helps a bit.
How To Speed Up Firefox (Helpful Vanity).
Have had XP-P ever since it was available. Have purchased the paid version of Eudora and keep it renewed for many years. The ads really annoyed me.
Eudora's tech fellow exchanged several messages and gave me a list of 6 or more different strategies to fix it. None worked though the last one seemed to temporarily. Not sure why it was fixed. Did several things. But then something happened within 24-72 hours and it was back to being broken in terms of sending attachments.
I have a DUAL AMD 1.2GIGHZ CPU ASUS MOTHER BOARD; 1.X GIG HARDWARE RAM; 160+ HD STORAGE OVER 2 DRIVES. My RAID HD's crashed and am on only one C drive now. Haven't been able to afford two new identical HD's. DVD WRITER and CD WRITER 2 different modules/machines. Microwave connection with ISP at a bit above ADSL speeds.
Always upgrade XP-P automatically. Have threatened to dump Norton and do have AVG going and some other spybot programs going. A newer one catching crashes is wonderful. Doesn't solve the Eudora problem, yet, though.
Not sure what to replace Norton with that would leave me feeling robustly protected.
Anyway--much appreciate your kind reply. I really prefer Eudora to anything else I've tried. It's just not perfect, like the rest of life.
I have serious problems with both of them. Firefox won't handle WEBSHOTS.COM downloads well.
IE REFUSES TO FINISH LOADING AT A HUGE PERCENTAGE OF SITES. Will hang for hours if allowed to. Can't find a solution.
I hate MicroSLOP. They are arrogant, buggy, insolent, insensitive, cheeky, trashy, . . . . and probably just plain evil.
THANKS TONS. WILL TRY THAT.
FIREFOX HAD PROVEN TROUBLESOME ENOUGH, I mostly gave up on it.
Outlook was so tied into windows that every time I ran it, it would cause some other program totally unrelated to email to no want to run.
I tired it for a few days. I didn't have much luck with it.
I love Firefox.
I seemed to have read that FireFox doesn't do duel processors very well.
Ahhhhh. That could explain it! THANKS.
far too true, imho.
A few more good ones:
Dictionary Search: search dictionary.com for a word using the context menu
Gmail Notifier: Gmail icon on the taskbar with number of messages
Plain Text Links: for those posters who forget to make their links clickable, highlight the text and open in a new tab using the context menu.
Funny, I just install it, let it create a profile and let it automatically import all the bookmarks and history. Never had a crash during that process. PDF reading works great without any tweaks, although Java can make Firefox unstable.
Well, that wasn't my experience. But I'm using it now, and everything's fine, so that's all behind me.
I have the default 'blue' & 'purple' and all is A okay.
In any case, cookies should not be the issue.
I use firebird as well, no problems for me whatsoever.
