Tree chopping lands forest owner in jail
Aftenposten - Norway ^ | 12/14/2004 | Hans O.Torgersen

The owner of a vast tract of virgin forest land in north-central Norway is in big trouble after chopping down trees on his own property. Newspaper Aftenposten reported Tuesday that the 54-year-old forest owner has been sentenced to six months in jail for chopping down the trees on his land in Flatanger, Nord-Trøndelag. The trees he chopped were in an area that was part of an officially designated nature preserve. An appeals court in Nord-Trøndelag ruled that the forest owner intentionally launched the logging operation, in the hopes that the area would thus lose its nature preserve status. Illegal logging He'd first been charged by Norway's white-collar crime unit (Økokrim) for logging in two areas of the nature preserve in 2001. He also chopped down trees in the area in 1995, when government officials already were discussing whether to regulate the area as a nature preserve. Prosecutors argued that the forest owner violated environmental restrictions aimed at protecting valuable virgin forests. 'Vandalism' The court agreed, claiming that the fallen trees were located in the nature preserve's most valuable area. They claimed the owner's logging operation was akin to vandalism. The forest owner defended his logging operation, saying county officials had led him to believe that the areas where he cut trees were exempt from the nature preserve regulations.

Just because it is in Norway doesn't mean it won't soon be coming to a city near you. Our city(Portland,Or.) requires the city forester to inspect each tree before cutting. Most people just go ahead and drop the tree anyway.

Yah. We now have a "Critical Areas Ordinance" in King Fraud County, WA, that will do much the same to rural landowners who do not leave 2/3 of their land in a "natural" state. (Think it's only fines get levied... now.)

The trees were not chopped down, they were just pining for the fjords.

A few years back, a local tree-hugger county commisioner pushed thru an ordinance that said no trees greater than 6 inches diameter could be cut on new construction sites without the approval of the county. That brought new construction to a dead halt. The law of unintended consequences forced the law to be rescinded.......

So what, exactly, are they perserving these "Virgin forests" for, if not as renewable resources? Their scenic value? Who traipses through arctic forests? In the summer you can't see anything through the clouds of mosquitos, and in the winter you can't see anything because your eyeballs freeze.

The STANDARD LIBERAL ANSWER is:

We are preserving them for future generations.......

At which time you say, "In approximately 4 billion years the sun will become a Red Giant and will vaporize this planet and everthing in it." .......

Someone should tell them trees are a renewable resource.
