Gaddafi upset by lack of 'reward' for giving up nukes

Libya's Col. Muammar Gaddafi has complained that the US and the rest of the international community have failed to "reward" him appropriately for giving up his weapons of mass destruction programs, and says that this failure is deterring countries like Iran and North Korea from following his example.

The colonel argues that his decision to "withdraw" from WMD programs was a critical factor in US President George W. Bush's reelection. "We know that with this withdrawal we contributed by 50 percent to his electoral campaign – a winning hand," the colonel says.

Not to be repetitious, but just to focus a little on the point:

So what do they have that we need?

Iran has oil & then more oil.

North Korea, now lets see,it does have lot of people living on grass & becoming guinea pigs for chem/bio weapons tests,so that would be useful for studying the effects of use of WMD in real conflicts.

Gaddafi has never really been the same after Reagan blew up his tent back in '86.

His reward is that we are not going to drop a JDAM on his sorry ass.

I don't think any demands (other than those routinely served to him over the last umpteen years)prompted him to give up his program.

Unless I've completely lost my timeline, didn't he give up in a surprise announcement when we found Saddam?

Better that we establish a strong relationship with this African state than should Europe and China.

Closer ties will help us greatly.

For all of Lybia's faults, it is nowhere as bad (jihad wise) as Iran, SA, or Algeria, and Europe will rush in to fill any perceived opening that will increase their clout and diminish ours.

Mo is just playing his political cards and getting the most that he can.

Were we to ignore this opening, then we would be making a huge mistake.

Sounds like Chirac filled his little head with visions of sugarplums when he visited the little whackjob last month.

Pretty much. It was an out of the blue sort of announcement after Saddam was captured.

The colonel supposedly said something to the effect of "I saw what happened to Saddam and I didn't want it to happen to me."

Later, it was said that he had been talking to the US and the UK for almost a year, but the capture pushed him over the edge.

I don't know if the last part was true or just anti Bush spin to try and take a bit of victory away from Bush.
