NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Eleven people, including teachers and school secretaries, were indicted Thursday on fraud and theft charges in a continuing FBI probe of corruption in the city's school system.
Those indicted included three employees of the school system's credit union, accused of stealing nearly $150,000 by withdrawing money from accounts of customers who were dead or had moved. Two insurance brokers were also accused of paying kickbacks to a school system administrator in return for contracts.
More than a dozen people have pleaded guilty, or agreed to do so, to charges of fraud and bribery in various schemes that have bled millions from the city's school system, considered one of the country's worst. Twenty-four people have been indicted this year.
Thursday's indictments came days after schools Superintendent Anthony Amato announced that the system faces a multimillion dollar deficit - and blamed the deficit partly on years of theft by its workers.

What else would you expect from a teachers union.

Looks like the state of Louisiana had better get the guillotine ready. Naw. I was born and raised in Louisiana. This sort of behavior is a prerequisite for higher office there.

I moved from Metairie (Suburb of New Orleans) to Carrollton, TX (Suburb of Dallas). Man what a difference! My kids went to school with thieves, rapists, and bullies...and that was the teaching staff!!! I love it here in Texas!
Not to say that it is without its problems, but I would not let my dog go to public school in New Orleans because it would come home the first day dumber and addicted to crack!!

We moved from Lafayette to McKinney Texas in the late 90's. Exactly like you stated, the difference was staggering. Although the New Orleans area makes Lafayette look like utopia, the school system in Lafayette continues to deteriorate. Nearly 99% of Louisiana school systems are of 3rd World quality.
Now we live in Williamson County, and the school here are equal in quality as is most Collin County schools.
