Women spar with sword and machete

By J. Eric Eckard

A spat between two children turned into a neighborhood duel, police said.

Rocky Mount police accused two women of attacking each other Wednesday morning at a school bus stop one armed with a sword and the other with a machete.

"They were swinging the sword and the machete at each other," said Rocky Mount police Sgt. Gerald Pipkin.

Both women Latecia Damita Anderson and Yolanda Nicole Braswell were charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Anderson, 29, of the 700 block of Ravenwood Drive and Braswell, 19, of the 600 block of Ravenwood Drive were released from custody under $1,000 bonds apiece.

The battle stemmed from a previous incident, in which Braswell's younger brother apparently struck Anderson's child in the eye with a rubber band on Tuesday either at their school or on the bus, Pipkin said. Shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday in front of Braswell's house, Anderson was on her child's bus when Braswell approached the bus armed with a machete, police charge.

"Anderson got off the bus, and a nearby person gave her a sword," said Pipkin, adding that it wasn't clear who gave Anderson the sword.

The two alleged combatants squared off, swinging their weapons at each other until officers arrived at the scene, police charge. Neither woman was hurt.

A third suspect also was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Marvin Rushard Braswell, 18, who lives at the same address as Yolanda Braswell, was accused of "hollering, shouting and encouraging the fight," police charge. He was released under a $500 bond. It's not known how the two were related.

And to think it was all started by a rubber band! Talk about escalation.

What in the hell was this woman doing on the bus with the machete in the first place? Was she going after the kid that popped her son in the eye with the rubber band?

Nice looking machete. When I grew up in Florida and camped a lot my best friend was a short Bolo machete. I don't know who made it and I've never seen one since (lost somewhere in college) even though I've looked.

This thing was thick and there was no way one could bend the blade. the head was much wider than the shaft and it could hold an edge through a lot of abuse.

The most similar in terms of blade I've found so far has been a british military surplus machete with a wooden handle.

Damn! The last four girls I dated all had names that ended with a vowel. It's all making sense now.
