The Yankees have reached agreement on the principal players in a three-team blockbuster trade that would land them coveted lefthander Randy Johnson, Newsday has learned. A few details have yet to be worked out, but indications are they are not big enough obstacles to kill the deal. The Yankees would receive the 41-year-old Johnson in the deal while sending pitcher Javier Vazquez and two minor-league prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan, to the Dodgers, according to an Arizona source. The Dodgers would send pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban and outfielder/first baseman Shawn Green to Arizona to complete the deal. Johnson and Green both have no-trade clauses. Johnson has been requesting a trade to the Yankees for quite a while, so he will surely give his OK. Green's former agent is Jeff Moorad, who currently runs the Diamondbacks, so there's a great likelihood he would also approve the deal. The other issues involve perks in Johnson's contract and how he would be reimbursed for the loss of them with a trade to the Yankees, such as his tickets to Phoenix Suns games, and physicals for the players involved.

Concur. Giambi is not cut out to play the bad guy. Steroids aside, it seems as if players with his build, from Jimmy Foxx to Ted Kluszewski to Boog Powell to Greg Luzinski, have relatively short shelf-lives. Of course, he has no incentive to accept a buyout from the Yankees -- what could be better than what he has? I could see the Yanks picking up most of Kevin Brown's salary just to have someone else take him. I don't see how he could show his face again in New York after the post-season meltdown.
Not sold on Pavano yet after just one good year. Wright's a head case.
I suppose the Yanks are just stuck with Giambi. No other team will touch him and the Yanks can't eat, what, $80 million? I suspect that they will go all out to void his contract. SHould be interesting.
Wright is definitely a headcase, but he was pretty good last year. I agree he is a gamble, but so are most of the pitchers on the free agent market. Pavano strikes me as a bit more solid and he does have the post-season experience. Of course, so does Wright. The Yankees had to make some pitching changes, if only for the sake of change, after that uninspiring performance last year. Vazquez was a real disappointment, and he was tabbed as a sure thing. I'm just glad we won't have Loaiza or Contreras to kick around anymore, and hopefully Brown will join that list. I did kind of hate to see Lieber go, though. He seemed to get stronger as the year went on.

Who is the pitcher your guys sent the Yanks for Lofton -- Rodriguez? Anything there? And didn't the Phils take Heredia off the Yanks hands?
I've always been a big fan of the big unit, but now, I have to say I hope he strains his left shoulder or some worse injury to disable him for the majority of the season. ANYTHING to thwart the Evil Empire and its Satanist leader!
If Johnson doesn't love where he is (he is a quirky guy), it can really impact his performance. We shall see.
I wouldnt mind Milton taking Brown's place in the rotation.
I don't know what the Yanks were thinking last year ('04). When I looked at their rotation coming out of Spring Training, I laughed. I knew Brown wasn't going to last and Moose would be okay, but the other three were a big "who" for me. If they sign Beltran, the only thing that can stop them will be them ... as in can 3 superstars coexist?

I hear it's between the Yanks and Houston for Beltran. He wants a 10-year deal. No way even Steinbrenner will go for that one. I read today that Houston was prepared to offer 90 million for six years. A guy can live on that. Supposedly The Boss is fixated on him. Milton's value to the Yanks goes down if The Unit really is coming to town. They were close to a deal, very close. Don't know if they want him now. But I agree, I'd take a pile of horse manure for Brown right about now.
This IS gonna be the year baby. No more Pedro. No more Curt. This year WE got a PITCHING staff to go with our Murderer's Row II.

That's the scary thing, after what I've seen today, yes they can be. That being said, this deal is garbage and likely untrue. The Dodgers were also supposed to have a deal made to get Hudson, who went to the Braves today. I hope Newsday is wrong.

Errr...not to POP your BALLOON, EINSTEIN, but the Yanks won the FIRST World Series of this Millenium (2000 - Yanks 4 - Mets 1).
