Report: Shots Fired In Crystal Cathedral

GARDEN GROVEA gunman fired shots inside the Crystal Cathedral on Thursday, police said, but it wasn't immediately known if anyone was injured.

The shooting happened about 4:45 p.m., said police Lt. Paul Prince. He said people within the cathedral grounds in Orange County were able to leave unharmed. The gunman, meanwhile, was believed to be loose somewhere on the cathedral grounds. Police quickly sealed off the area

"It is a fluid situation. We have officers on scene," Prince said.

The shooting took place shortly before two scheduled presentations of the world-famous cathedral's annual "Glory of Christmas" holiday show was to begin. The first was scheduled for 6:30 p.m., followed by another at 8:30 p.m.

The cathedral, a huge, shining glass-and-steel edifice not far from Disneyland and baseball's Angels Stadium, is home to the Rev. Robert Schueller's international Crystal Cathedral Ministries and claims a congregation of more than 10,000 members. The internationally televised "Hour of Power" is broadcast from there.

The cathedral's Glory of Christmas program began with the goal of becoming a holiday tradition in Southern California...

Here are more details, from the Associated Press:
Gunman loose at landmark Crystal Cathedral in Southern California

Associated Press

A gunman opened fire inside the grounds of the world-famous Crystal Cathedral on Thursday, but no one was hit and children in a church day-care center were rushed to safety, police said.

A police SWAT team quickly surrounded the gleaming glass-and-steel cathedral and its surrounding buildings, and a police spokesman said the gunman, possibly a disgruntled cathedral employee, was holed up inside an office.

"Everyone's fine and we're just trying to contain him now and find out what the problem is," police Lt. Mike Hanfield told KCBS-TV. He said police officers had made telephone contact with the man they believed to be the shooter and were trying to talk him into surrendering.

"He's armed with a handgun. We know several shots were fired," Hanfield said. "He's in an office area, we don't know if it's in the cathedral. They have him contained."

Hanfield described the man as "distraught, disgruntled" and said he may have been a temporary employee.

Police Lt. Paul Prince said authorities didn't know what prompted the gunfire, which rang out shortly before 5 p.m., less than two hours before the cathedral's annual "Glory of Christmas" holiday show was to begin.

Children who had been in a cathedral day-cay center waiting for their parents were safely removed.

The cathedral, a huge, sprawling structure not far from Disneyland and baseball's Angels Stadium, is home to the Rev. Robert Schueller's international Crystal Cathedral Ministries and claims a congregation of more than 10,000 members. The internationally televised "Hour of Power" is broadcast from there.

The cathedral's Glory of Christmas program began with the goal of becoming a holiday tradition in Southern California. Today it draws visitors from around the world to a show that includes Christmas carols and a production featuring live animals and such special effects as flying angels. Prerecorded orchestration by the London Symphony Orchestra provides the musical backdrop for live performances by adult and child soloists. The cathedral's world-renowned pipe organ also fills the all glass structure with holiday sounds.

Two programs were scheduled Thursday night, the one at 6:30 p.m. and another at 8:30 p.m.

Schueller, the cathedral's longtime leader, arrived in Garden Grove in 1955, founding a local Reformed Church in America congregation. He gained international fame almost immediately when he rented the Orange Drive-in theater and began conducting Sunday services from the roof of the snack bar.

As his congregation grew rapidly, he launched plans to build the cathedral, which quickly became an architectural icon.

His son Robert Anthony Schueller is also an ordained minister and preaches at the cathedral. Schueller has designated him as his successor.

It is a fluid situation.

A liquid to crystal transition is a thermodynamic one; i.e. the crystal is energetically more favourable than the liquid when below the melting point. The glass transition is purely kinetic: i.e. the disordered glassy state does not have enough kinetic energy to overcome the potential energy barriers required for movement of the molecules past one another. The molecules of the glass take on a fixed but disordered arrangement. Glasses and supercooled liquids are both metastable phases rather than true thermodynamic phases like crystalline solids. In principle, a glass could undergo a spontaneous transition to a crystalline solid at any time. Sometimes old glass devitrifies in this way if it has impurities.

Of Course they carry guns. They are criminals. The liberals only want to get rid of guns for the general public. As far as I can decipher their philosophy...they only want cops and criminals to have guns. They don't believe the ordinary citizen should have a way to defend theirself. That's about as much sense as I can make of the democrat's philosophy on it. Debated one the other night. Wow. He fit the mold to a T. A few quotes from him...."It is impossible to be a republican and not be a racist." "You have to be an idiot to believe in God." And after ridiculous statements like this...he thought it was ridiculous that I said his opinion didn't matter to me because he didn't vote. It almost got ugly!

From www.seeing-stars.com:

If ever there was a "Hollywood" church, in the true sense of the word, it is the Community Church in Garden Grove, better known as The Crystal Cathedral. Ironically, it isn't even located in Hollywood; it's just a couple miles away from Disneyland, out in Orange County. But the Crystal Cathedral is pure show biz, from its movie star guest speakers to its artful use of the power of TV.

The largest glass building in the world, the Cathedral was built by the Rev. Robert Schuller. Schuller started out in 1955, as pastor of California's first "drive-in" church, in Garden Grove. (Yes, it was actually situated in an old drive-in movie theatre, and Schuller preached from the roof of the concession stand.) After significant success on the airwaves, Rev. Schuller opened the Crystal Cathedral in 1980.

Each week, the Sunday services at the Crystal Cathedral are broadcast live across the nation as "The Hour of Power," and they often feature Hollywood stars...

-- snip --

...Each year, the Crystal Cathedral puts on two major pageants: "The Glory of Christmas." (in December), and "The Glory of Easter" (in March). These dramatic religious spectacles blend religion & show-biz; they feature a cast of 200 in Biblical period costumes, a choir, flying "angels," live animals, and joyous music from a 70-piece orchestra. (You haven't been to church until you've seen live camels walking up the aisle, and an "angel" flying overhead on wires!)
