December 15, 2004 LETS HAVE A PARTYBUT NOT A CHRISTMAS ONE Catholic League president William Donohue today addressed whats been happening to Christmas parties in the workplace:
For decades, employees at Time magazine had a Christmas party and looked forward to receiving a Christmas bonus. But starting three years ago, the party was banned and so were the Christmas bonuses. This is not to say that bonuses are no longer giventhey areits just that the dreaded C-word is no longer associated with them. This is progress. The mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts recently apologized for calling the citys Christmas party a Christmas party. Its now a Holiday party. ProGroup diversity specialists advise that one way around the December Dilemma is to keep holidays inclusive and informative. So they suggest, try using seasonal themes rather than a holiday one. Good ideaholiday themes remind people of Christmas. Simma Lieberman Associates bluntly advises, make sure your Holiday party isnt a Christmas party in disguise. Off with the red and green! The Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding is not too understanding of Christmas this year, and that is why it wants a Seasonal or Winter party and a Seasonal or Holiday exchange. Matt Cherry of the Institute of Humanist Studies also favors Holiday parties over Christmas parties and advocates secret Snowflakes instead of secret Santas. An AP story says corporations are barring religious music from cubicles and are calling their Christmas parties end of the year parties. If youre looking for an explanation for all this, consider what Arlene Vernon of HrxInc says: employers need to be sensitive to the fact that holidays dont make everyone happy. If she had any guts, shed advocate banning Christmas altogether, but that may affect her profits.

Matt Cherry of the Institute of Humanist Studies also favors Holiday parties over Christmas parties...Matt Cherry would do well to get a clue--"holiday" is a contraction of "holy day".

I want Labor Day renamed. It's insulting for all those who don't believe in work.
To: NYer
It's not an original idea of mine, but it bears repeating:
Sometimes I think that people so offended by Christmas should refuse the day off, and refuse the bonus.
I'll make sure as I travel that any country that I am in doesn't do ANYTHING that could possibly offend my culture and traditions.
Or maybe there are just too many lawyers in the US to perpetuate this nonsense.
I respect others' traditions and beliefs. I just want people to respect mine.
Next time I hear the word "holiday" awkwardly substituted for Christmas (which is on its way to being as frowned upon in its own way as the n-word), I am going to puke.
So I'll say it, while I still can:
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
:)

Well by all means, let's make sure everyone is unhappy so the unhappy ones won't feel too bad about being unhappy because now everyone is unhappy. Hmmm...this is going to be tough. Who could possibly feel GOOD about that.
Okay...let's just go back to SOME people being unhappy and the rest of us will celebrate CHRISTMAS!!

I would LOVE for someone to walk in here (which would entail opening a door) and tell me to shut off "Carol of the Bells" by Cast in Bronze.
Not much work would be done thereafter that day, by me or my alleged persecutor.

I want May Day renamed. I don't believe in a day dedicated to Communist parades.
I do like the giving of candy kids do for each other on the first of May. So let's call May 1st "Candy Day"!!!
Except I guess that would piss off all the fatties.
I suck at this sensitivity stuff.

some people need to understand that we LIVE IN A CHRISTIAN COUNTRY.
if you can't get over that, go over to godless europe.

It's an interesting exercize to go to the different major retailers' web sites, just to see who has a "Merry Christmas" greeting and who does not.
Macy's and its parent company Federated Department Stores have "Merry Christmas" on their web sites.
Sears, Walmart, Sam's Club, Target, K-mart, and JC Penney do not. They only have "Holiday" greetings.
You can tell more by going directly to the source than by reading stories.

I'm ticked off at the White House. During the most recent Barney Cam (and last years too), Laura wishes everyone "Happy Holidays". She could at least say "Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays."
