Daughter Barred Distributing Bible Club Invitations

POSTED: 12:13 am MST December 16, 2004 UPDATED: 12:21 am MST December 16, 2004

DENVER -- The parents of an elementary school student who was told not to distribute invitations asking classmates to join a Bible club sued the school district in federal court Wednesday, claiming their right to religious freedom had been violated.

The lawsuit says the Gilpin County RE-1 School District violated constitutional rights protecting free speech and religion. Robert and Patricia Unruh said the school barred their daughter from distributing the invitations based solely on their religious content.

.....several parents had complained and said the invitations had caused a disturbance, according to the suit.

Stand Firm. Anyone ever been "disturbed" by an invitation? I haven't.

Kids should be allowed to distribute such items anytime outside of classroom time. The religious nature of the invitations should not even be a consideration.

An invitation to a Bible study is disturbing, but handouts on how to use a condom are okay. What is wrong with these people?

Well, I think we really need more common sense from our school officials. Kids have religious beliefs. There's no reason whatever that they should not express them at school, and the law prohibits restrictions on such expression.

The exception is during classroom time. During class time, instruction should be going on. Outside of the classroom, though, the kids should be allowed to distribute things like this.

The courts have ruled again and again that kids have that right, whether it's an invitation to join the Chess Club or a Bible study group. School administrators need some legal lessons.

The suits have already been won on these issues.

I hope the ACLJ [ American Center for Law and Justice ] is helping in this effort.

The girl's father is a newsman for The Associated Press in Denver.

Amazing! How did the AP let that one slip through?
