AERIE MARY BLASTED (NY POST IS FINALLY BEGINNING TO TAKE THE RIGHT SIDE IN THE HAWK STORY)
NY Post ^ | December 16, 2004

Mary Tyler Moore has been pecking at her co-op board and neighbors for evicting the renowned hawks from her posh Fifth Avenue building — but yesterday they crowed back, accusing her of orchestrating the pro-bird campaign as a personal vendetta. "She has a big ax to grind," said a board source. "A lot of her activism is bent on vengeance after the co-op board turned down a potential buyer for her apartment."

Moore was the most vociferous of the residents of 927 Fifth Ave. to oppose the board's decision to take down Pale Male and Lola's nest, even joining the protesters in their spirited picket line.

The sitcom pioneer has two apartments that have been on the market since the summer; one on the eighth floor for $18.5 million, and a first-floor studio apartment — used primarily as an office by her husband, Dr. Robert Levine — for $2 million.

Moore was thrilled when she found a buyer willing to pay roughly more than $2 million over the asking price for the eighth-floor residence.

But the potential purchaser, a Russian citizen, was perceived by the board to be a person of questionable reputation.

"She tried to push someone on the co-op board that no co-op board in the city would've accepted," said another building insider. "He traveled with bodyguards. He was just what you don't want in a family building."

The 12-story prewar building is populated mostly by families with children. During a co-op board meeting about six weeks ago, the applicant for Moore's apartment was turned down in a quick and decisive vote.

"Mary went ballistic," said the board source. "It was a messy turndown."

As my father says, "One's affinity for large predators varies proportionally with distance..."

He lives out west in mountain lion country in Washington state. Every year the citizens of Seattle pass more rules protecting the mountain lions and making it impossible to control them. He is trying to arrange a "catch and release" program that will let the mountain lions go at the base of the Space Needle in downtown Seattle, which will change the opinions of the city dwellers in a 'right quick.

how come Lola gets such short shift

I'm surprised a big hawk fan doesn't know the answer to this...

Lola is Pale Male's 4th or 5th mate (I forget) to nest with him across from Central Park. Pale Male is famous not only because of his choice of where to build his nest, but also because of his unusual plumage. His mates have just been regular old red-tailed hawks (old figuratively... Lola is quite young.)

And here I thought I was the only one who thought the residents of the building had the right to live in their homes without having to keep half their windows covered at all times.

I just keep picturing people standing on the road in front of my home, peering with binoculars, and suddenly having to live with that intrusion over a pair of birds.

Right. Who is speaking up for the poor homeless pigeons whose displacement led to Pale Male's opportunity to develop the property. The nest was anchored to anti-pigeon spikes.

The documentary about the hawks was on TV the other night.

In one scene a man comes with a large sack and throws seeds out for the pigeons......I believe in the park.......hundreds of pigeons converge on the seeds......and then........BBBBBOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM......a hawk swoops down and grabs up one of the pigeons.

The co-op board, however, shopped this little tidbit precisely to make MTM look bad. They're having their little hissy fit, and trying to spread the bad publicity around a bit.

I would have to agree there. If the co-op board wants to kick Big Bird out of Seasame Street that's their perogative, but it seems like a paticularly bad PR move to me.

If I lived in a place where you're not allowed to defend yourself, I'd be happy to have someone with bodyguards living in my building!

The guy sounds like Russian Mafia. If so, his "associates" would blow the damn buiding down to get him if they wanted. They will kill anyone at any time and like the Islamonazis, don't care at all about bystanders. Those guys make guys like Gotti and the old Italian Mafia look like Camp Fire Girls.

I play golf at a club just north of the city. When I noticed that you never see squirrils early in the morning and late in the afternoon, I asked a woman in the Audubon society about it. She said that squirrils can't look up, because their eyes are on the side of their head. They look side to side. So the way they know the hawk is around is by the shadow. But they can only see his shadow when the sun is realitively high in the sky. As the sun gets lower, the sun moves farther and farther away, and the squirrils know it's time to call it a day.

I've heard stories from two different bartenders on the subject.

What did they say?

"Didya see the rack on that one?"
"Same again?"

Shes diabetic. I doubt she drinks.

If this nest was on top of a tree in Western Montana, is there any doubt environmentalists would be calling for a 400-acre buffer zone?

Red tails aren't anything near endangered in NM. I've got a couple that routinely keep vermin off my property. When I catch gophers, I just leave the carcass on a fence post for them.
