Far-Right UK Leader Arrested After Calling Islam 'Wicked'

(CNSNews.com ) - The leader of a far-right political party in Britain was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of incitement to racial hatred after he was secretly filmed calling Islam a "vicious, wicked" religion.

British National Party (BNP) leader Nick Griffin was questioned by police in the northern English city of Halifax before being released on bail and told to reappear at a police station next March.

Speaking to reporters after being released, he repeated his view that "there are aspects of that religion which are wicked," and he cited the treatment of women under Islam.

He attributed his arrest to attempts by Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labor Party to win back lost Muslim support ahead of an election expected in the spring. Many Muslim Britons strongly opposed Britain's high-profile role in the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

A BBC television documentary on the BNP last July included footage of Griffin making the remarks at a meeting, which was filmed by an undercover journalist who had infiltrated the party.

"This wicked, vicious faith has expanded through a handful of cranky lunatics about 1,300 years ago until it is now sweeping country after country," Griffin said.

He told the meeting that in the Koran, "you will find verse after verse after verse which says that you can take any woman you want as long as they are not Muslim women."

The BNP has been trying to present a more acceptable face to British voters since Griffin was convicted in 1998 for publishing a magazine questioning the Holocaust.

He has accused Jews of controlling the media, and the party called for a complete separation of races in some tense racially-mixed areas.

It is not yet illegal in Britain to incite religious hatred, so Griffin instead will face charges instead of inciting racial hatred.

The British government recently introduced creating a new criminal offense of inciting "hatred against a group of persons defined by reference to religious belief or lack of religious belief."

Critics say the proposed legislation could be widely abused, preventing people from criticizing another religion or even trying to win converts.

Islamic groups have welcomed the measure.

Since when do Muslims constitute a "race"? Like Christians, Muslims hail from many countries, many racial backgrounds and many skin tones.

Poor Albion.

And yet, when a fatwa was issued for Salman Rushdie's head, British Muslims (oxymoron?) openly marched through the streets calling for his murder and death! Were any of them arrested? No! This PC insanity has got to stop!

we've had this discussion on two other treads so far, we - the brits - have shot down the 'free speech' argument and the only thing left is the rascist slime.

please visit the other BNP related threads to see the argument in full, its not fair to make us go through the whole thing THREE times.

whover is starting the multiple threads knows they were held to ridicule and so have just started again somewhere else.

"Islam is", Khataw preaches, "a peaceful religion that is focused on charity and goodwill toward others."

~ and ~

"Not to mention that Islam came to save humanity from ignorance and oppression. Islam is not a threat to any society. Islam calls for harmony and peaceful co-existence with other religions. It does not permit aggression, violence, injustice, or oppression. At the same time, it calls to morality, justice, tolerance, and peace."

Ummmm, no; no it's not. I won't go into *what it is*, as I'd probably get in trouble... aw, what the heck:

Arrested or brought into the station for questioning? If he was simply questioned at the station and released was he really arrested?

He was detained. At least to me, that is considered an arrest.

Not much chance of that. Half of us are retarded and the other half can't think straight.

Anthony Kemp's book, "The Estrangement of the Past," is a pretty good explanation of why early Protestants pretty much had to identify the Catholic Church with the Whore of Babylon.

The Woman in the Wilderness in the Book of Revelation, whom Catholics identify as the Virgin Mary, early Protestants identified as the Church lost in the wilderness during the years from the early Church to Martin Luther. They posited that a false Church sat in Rome from the time of Constantine, or earlier, and that the original, Apostolic Church only reappeared at the time of Luther. This is also why some Protestant theologians have recourse to the phrase "Church Invisible," because for more than a thousand years the true Church wasn't the Church that everyone could see.

At least these Protestants have a theological argument to make. The secular establishment doesn't bother. They just bash and persecute the Church because it stands in the way of their agenda.

Actually my understanding is that the Baptist denomination of Chritianity is decended directly from the early church without going through the RCC..... for what it's worth :)

Yes there's no free speech at all. In fact us Brit FReepers are actually writing on this forum from designated holding cells, awaiting our public humiliation and subsequent beheading...

Of course you guys have LOADS of free speech. I sure I DIDN'T read on this very forum only...hmmmmm ten minutes ago about Christmas tree's being taken down, and Christians arrested on the streets for hate crime:

Of course the arrests are stupid and the extension of the law against inciting racial hatred to religious groups is a worrying development.

However US FReepers, please do not devote any sympathy to the BNP or labour under the delusion that they are somehow fellow conservatives.

Despite the shiny PR strategy under Griffin in recent years the BNP remains what it always was - a bunch of Hitler-worshiping thugs who would have the gas ovens back faster than you can say "Juden raus" if you gave them half a chance.

I think this is an appropriate forum to once again quote another "far-right" UK pol regarding Islam. See if you can guess who said this....

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property—either as a child, a wife, or a concubine—must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science—the science against which it had vainly struggled—the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

Hmmm...the man is arrested on suspicion of incitement to racial hatred...but THEN goes forward with a film where he says "Islam" and religion...

Case dismissed...Islam is a RELIGION...NOT a "race"...QED!
