(CNSNews.com ) - The leader of a far-right political party in Britain was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of incitement to racial hatred after he was secretly filmed calling Islam a "vicious, wicked" religion.
British National Party (BNP) leader Nick Griffin was questioned by police in the northern English city of Halifax before being released on bail and told to reappear at a police station next March.
Speaking to reporters after being released, he repeated his view that "there are aspects of that religion which are wicked," and he cited the treatment of women under Islam.
He attributed his arrest to attempts by Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labor Party to win back lost Muslim support ahead of an election expected in the spring. Many Muslim Britons strongly opposed Britain's high-profile role in the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
A BBC television documentary on the BNP last July included footage of Griffin making the remarks at a meeting, which was filmed by an undercover journalist who had infiltrated the party.
"This wicked, vicious faith has expanded through a handful of cranky lunatics about 1,300 years ago until it is now sweeping country after country," Griffin said.
He told the meeting that in the Koran, "you will find verse after verse after verse which says that you can take any woman you want as long as they are not Muslim women."
The BNP has been trying to present a more acceptable face to British voters since Griffin was convicted in 1998 for publishing a magazine questioning the Holocaust.
He has accused Jews of controlling the media, and the party called for a complete separation of races in some tense racially-mixed areas.
It is not yet illegal in Britain to incite religious hatred, so Griffin instead will face charges instead of inciting racial hatred.
The British government recently introduced creating a new criminal offense of inciting "hatred against a group of persons defined by reference to religious belief or lack of religious belief."
Critics say the proposed legislation could be widely abused, preventing people from criticizing another religion or even trying to win converts.
Islamic groups have welcomed the measure.
Typical, insult the jews, nothign happens. Dare to insult ISLAM and he gets arrested.
They hate the West. Why are they here ?
I wonder if a reasonable defense would be that what he said is true?
In England the libel laws are a great deal stricter than they are here, but demonstrating the truth of the words that were spoken is a valid defense.
That's what got Oscar Wilde in trouble. He sued the family of Lord Alfred Douglas after they accused him of being guilty of the sin which dares not speak its name. It was an ill considered move, because Douglas's family counter-sued, saying that they had spoken the truth and that Wilde was indeed a homosexual. As a result, Wilde ended up in Reading Gaol.
Of course the English were less politically correct in those days.
We have our own "hate crime" laws in several states that liberals and even RINOs would love to expand and put on the Federal level. What has happened to this British politician, even if he is a white supremacist and a neo-Nazi, is a dangerous precedent. Today it may be Nick Griffin. Tomorrow it could be merely a conservative who advocates restricting non-European immigration into the UK. In an American context, such a law would first be used on the likes of David Duke. Later it would be turned on people like Tom Tancredo or Michael Savage
The "Rights of Englishmen" have never included unfettered freedom of speech.

LOL!
Life on bent knee as a SUBJECT of the Crown!
THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOUNDING FATHERS!
I've seen the same (or similar) and could never quite figure out the .. ah ... logic (cough). The Roman Catholic Church was the first organized Christian religion and if not for the RCC, there'd be no others. And if not for the RCC and its monasteries during the 'Dark Ages' all knowledge remaining from the Romans and Greeks would have been L-O-S-T.
Martin Luther was Catholic, Henry The VIII was Catholic, so without the RCC, there'd be no Protestants, Episcopalians, Lutherans, etc. etc, etc. Even the Mormons would not exist without there first being the RCC and the New Testament.
Granted during the Middle Ages some Popes where not exactly models of morality (Borgia for instance) but all things considered the RCC is the 'father' (or mother) of Christianity.
(gee, think I'll get flamed?)
Enough to draw my conclusions! How many do you know?
How could he "incite racial hatred" if the meeting in question was a private affair that the journalist needed to "infiltrate" to gain access to? And anyway, Islam isn't a race. (Muslims come in many colors).
Can and did. Don't have to know them. Read the Koran newbie.
He told the meeting that in the Koran, "you will find verse after verse after verse which says that you can take any woman you want as long as they are not Muslim women."
I suppose that if he had simply said, "This faith has expanded through a handful of people about 1,300 years ago until it is now sweeping country after country." he would be OK? What about the fact that what he says is the TRUTH? The Qu'ran DOES say in verse after verse that you can take any woman so long as she isn't Muslim! It also says to kill all the non-believers and that the people of the Book (Jews and Christians) have a "special place" in Hell reserved for them. So I suppose that speaking the TRUTH about Islam is illegal under this proposed law? Shameful!
I wonder what the ACLU would do if a law such as this were proposed here in the USA? (/sarcasm)
"They hate the West. Why are they here ?"
Muslims divide the world into two "Houses" - the "House" of Peace, where Islam is the dominant religion and the "House" of War, where Islam is not the dominant religion.
Islam enjoins its followers to spread its belief system throughout the world, using whatever methods possible to convert the "House" of War into the "House" of Peace.
They are here to convert us or our children and make the entire world the "House" of Peace as Mohammad directed.
They can accomplish this as they are doing now - peacefully using our own legal system against us by opposing public displays of Christianity or Judaism, by converting non-Muslims and by marrying non-Muslims. Or, once their numbers reach a large enough proportion, employ the violent forceful techniques they are using in the Sudan, Nigeria, Egypt, etc.
As long as the liberal, non-sectarian west continues to believe Islam is just another religion like Hinduism Buddhism or indeed, Christianity or Judaism, and refuses to recognize it for the kind of aggressive cult it is, Islam will continue to make ever greater inroads in the West.
Thanks.
I did consider 'caprophiliac pals'. ;^)
