George: By George is an expression used as an oath or to express surprise. It is the modern version of the old battle cry of English soldiers, most well known in Shakespeare's Henry V where the King shouts: "for Harry, England and St George!"

Most Presidents struggle in their second term so if Bush just has a successful one of those it will be noteworthy. We can't tell today how Bush will be judged in the years to come. Look how much Reagan's stature among historians has grown in little more than a decade since he left office much to anger of the left.

I am still dumbfounded as to his stance on immigration.

What has the President said that's dumfounded you?

Democrat F. D. Roosevelt, who stirred the destitute with optimistic words during the Great Depression.

I am not sure that telling the destitute that the government will take care of them is a great thing. Far too many people now believe the government has a bigger role in their lives than it should.

The fall of the Dollar is not all bad, we will produce and buy more American goods thereby putting more Americans to work. The foreign countries like China set their monetary value not the market. Japan buys dollars to keep their Yen value down.

As a kid growing up in the eighties with all the cold war scare tactics in the media, I remember always feeling safer knowing President Reagan was in charge, safer still that our two countries were so close, and Prime Minister Mulroney and the Mr. Reagan were so close as friends, and co-operated so closely together.

One can only hope that we will get a leader up here that will bring that closeness and co-operation back. There is no question that together, the U.S. and Canada will prosper as long as we co-operate, watch out for each other. We've got oil, water etc. in abundance, you've got the know-how and the military.

"clinton will eventually sink to the bottom as time passes on and newer generations of historians without ties to them evaluate him fairly."

Nah--Clinton will never make it to the VERY BOTTOM. There will always be at least ONE president who was worse---also a Democrat---James Earl (Peanut) Carter.

Its in direct contradiction to to real security for this country. 9/11 was capable of being pulled off because of lax immigration enforcement.

Additionally, the states are being starved to death by having to pay for criminal aliens who should be on a plane home immediately.

If we are hit again, and it has anything to do with illegal immigration as in 9/11/01, it will not bode well for GWB as far as his legacy is concerned.

It's a free market economy. the way it goes is largely the result of the cumulative votes of millions of consumers.

That's a misnomer for the most part. That's like saying a man tempted to have sex with a beautiful woman is voting for lower standards across the board by failing to hold up his moral high ground and giving in. That's the way it may be read whether it's the intention or not. If consumers are left with no choice, their "vote" is not much distinguishable than voting for a Soviet Russion politician. Let's see, we have a choice between Kruschev.. If incomes are so low they have no choice what are they going to do but get the best they can for their money. If you give people the clear choice between losing there 50k job and having to go to work at a 15k a year retail job, while getting 10 cents off a tea-shirt from china, that's no contest. They aren't being given that choice; but, that's essentially the way you portray it. We do all bear responsibility; but, it helps to know that you're making a choice when you're forced into something due to circumstance.

As it stands now, if we just stop now and put things back the way we were, the US worker has been set back 10 years or more. It will take a long time for the economy to recover. And the longer this goes on, the more damaging and the longer it will take to recover.

"By "George" I think he's got it! (That is a funny saying, I wonder where it comes from, anyone know?)"

Professor Henry Higgins, in "My Fair Lady."

Economies have live and synergy of their own. attempts to control them do more harm than good. Remember Nixon's price controls? Worked out nicely, didn't they? Not! Tariffs? Same bad deal. Bush's steel tariffs ended up really hurt our manufacturers. They also led us into the 1930's depression

Economies can be coaxed and perhaps nudged a little. They cannot be designed. They cannot be controlled. Looking to a president to make economic conditions what we think they should be is unrealistic.

Bush's steel tariffs ended up really hurt our manufacturers. They also led us into the 1930's depression

Bush's steel tariffs ended up doing harm; but, you're not telling the whole story are you. Steel tariffs were tampered with in the first place to allow foreign steel into the country at rates below what steel could be produced for here - ie dumping defined. Bush attempted to rebalance that without allowing for the new imbalance caused by the longterm effects of dumping on the industry. That is why it did harm, not simply because a tariff was imposed. If the system hadn't been gamed to subvert that industry to begin with, he wouldn't have been in that position. It illustrates the extent of the damage done by these things before they even bothered with "free trade" via Nafta and the WTO. They already knew what the damage would be and did it anyway. Economics can be more than coaxed and nudged. When it means ya'll get cut off from gaming the system for advantage, then we hear all about what "can't" be done. There is no such thing as can't.

I am dumbfounded by the idiocy and pandering of the program where common sense dictates that our borders be controlled, illegal criminals thrown out, and serious measures are taken to enforce current laws.

Now, you tell me, what don't you understand?
