Democrat chairman resigns after disappointing fall elections

By The Associated Press

After a series of stinging disappointments in this fall's congressional elections, the head of the Louisiana Democratic Party said Monday that he is stepping down from his leadership post. Party chairman Mike Skinner said his resignation would become effective at the next meeting of the Democratic State Central Committee early next year.

Skinner, a former U.S. attorney in Louisiana, was elected chairman in March 2003, and that year the Democrats regained the Governor's Mansion with the election of Kathleen Blanco and held onto nearly every statewide elected position.

But a year later, in the latest round of elections, the party lost several congressional seats, with U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander switching to the GOP in the northern 5th District and Republican Charles Boustany winning the 7th District seat held previously by Democrats.

The biggest loss of all was the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Democrat John Breaux, who is retiring. The post, which had been held by a Democrat since Reconstruction, now is moving to Republican hands with the election of David Vitter.

While referring to "great election successes" and "bitter defeats" in the last two election cycles, Skinner didn't blame his resignation on mounting pressure to replace him. In a prepared statement, Skinner said he was leaving the position to pursue "certain professional and business opportunities," and he said he believes the Democratic Party remains strong.

"It had been my intention for some time to hand over the reins after the past election cycle, and that time has now come," Skinner said.

Skinner's successor will be chosen at that the next Democratic State Central Committee meeting, but no meeting date has been decided.

"had been held by a Democrat since Reconstruction, now is moving to Republican hands" When you start reading these words it translates in realingment. When it happened in Alabama years ago, I just loved it.

Kind of like the Dierctor of the National Park Service being held responsible for the blow up of Mt. St Helen. There were natural forces acting in Louisiana that no party chief was going to restrain for very long.

The best part is that the state GOP was working at only 65% hapless instead of the usual 100%.
