Marines learn how to fight for Allah Wait a minute. I thought we were supposed to believe that the jihadists were twisting the Qur'an. And now the American marines are studying the Qur'an in order to think like jihadists? What does that tell us? From the Times Online, with thanks to J. Lynch:
AMERICAN marines and military intelligence analysts are studying the tactics of insurgents in Iraq — staging mock hostage takings, roadside bombings and suicide missions, as well as studying the Koran, praying to Allah and learning to think like jihadists. The Pentagon is struggling to adapt to an enemy that has just claimed the life of the 1,000th combat soldier in Iraq. “The department simply has to be more agile,” Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, admitted last week. “We have got to focus more on the post-conflict phase.”...
For a touch of realism, newcomers are supplied with traditional Arab garments and ordered to take off their shoes indoors. “You need to think of yourselves as mujaheddin, holy warriors,” the group is told, “and you aspire to be a shahid, a martyr killed in battle.”
In Ali G accents, the trainees learn to call out Allahu Akbar (God is most great) and Alhamdu Lillah (praise be to God). They are given a Penguin Classics translation of the Koran and an Islamic prayer mat and are shown how to pray.
“One reason you are strong is that the infidels go to church only on Sunday, but you kneel and reflect your submission to God five times a day,” Purdy told them in character.
“We don’t have nuclear weapons, but we have you and you are more powerful than the weapons of the Jewish dogs and infidel crusaders.”
For supper they are given pitta bread, tahini and stuffed vine leaves, which they poke at mistrustfully with their fingers — there is no cutlery. In a room next door are peanuts, chocolate bars and crisps for those who cannot cope. “The guys are only used to hamburgers,” said Purdy.

What they should have done was to finance a whole lot of language training for troops and civilians after 9/11. Our government is sorely lacking in translators.

Couldn't agree more.
I can understand the rationale for the training ("Know thine enemy"), but this Penguin version of the Koran by N.J. Dawood is apparently quite flawed and inaccurate, according to the reviews posted on Amazon.com.
I agree that there is significant value to this, as long as you psychologically screen the participants. The danger is that some of these guys might get too into character & actually go over to the Dark Side.

The Penguin Classics translation is developed especially to adopt a very much softer translation of the harsh verses in Quran. So when someone reads a Penguin Classic translation of the Quran, they will NEVER get the true amount of violence Islam advocates on non_muslims. As a result, the whole purpose of actually educating the marines to understand the islamic tactics gets lost completely. Also, there is an imminent danger where marines might even have a view "oh well, Islam and Quran are not violent and infact they are peaceful", while the exact opposite is the truth.
This ia big concern....I hope DoD gives the marines the transliteration of Quran by Yusuf Ali or Pickthal or Bukhari. These three transileterations are word-per-word exact transileteration of the Arabic text of Quran. infact, this serves the whole purpose of educating the US marines about the tactics of the Islamists. I hope someone working in the DoD sees Freeper message boards and try to do something about giving Yusuf Ali's or Pickthal's or Bukhari's transiletrations.
I am cent per cent positive, that it must be some prominent Imam in USA that must have recommended the DoD the penguin's Classic translation as it is translated in such a way to adopt a softer tone so as to win converts for Islam.
Just compare Yusuf Ali's, Penguin's versions to actual Arabic Quran. You will know what I am talking about.
I hope some one in DoD realizes what they are doing....infact the penguin's version of Quran will end up converting some marines. I am positive on this....

Actually, this is 100% accurate and it applies not only to the Marines, but to each one of our branches sending undercover forces into the bowels of the Iraqi street and countryside.
I talked to a US Army Arab linquist last month whom I just happened to meet and strike up a conversation with after he told me he had just rotated back from Iraq and served out his enlistment. It was a fascinating conversation and I've never seen the young man again.
The young man explained to me he spent time both in Afghanistan and also Iraq as a SPECOPS Arab linguist. (BTW: He was neither Muslim, nor an Arab. He was trained to be an Arab linquist by our DoD.)
I asked him: "How do the Muslims think?" His reply somewhat surprised me: "Just like we do. They think just like we do. They get tired, hungry, scared, bored, and mad just like we do. They hate us mostly because we are in their country and then mostly because we are not Muslims - we represent everything they despise in a human being."
I asked him many questions and learned a lot about the mindset of the average Iraqi on the street. Without going into ops details, the young man said he was 'Glad to be out.' His MOS is critically needed now, but he said he 'Did what he had to do and was proud of it but was ready to let somebody else get their chance.'
I asked him how many Muslims he had waxed. He stopped counting at twenty. Then, the shadows of war came across his face, and he reflected not on how many enemy he had killed, but rather on his close friends that "Didn't come back."
Anger came over him when he began to describe to me the sheer stupidity of the politically correct mindset of our military planners. Yep. I said sheer stupidity.
The replacements for his team didn't arrive until the very day of his departure. That very same day and within only an hour of their departure time, the team's Iraqi liaison took a bullet in the head. For 'ops' reasons, they kept his body with them even up to the point of meeting the new team as they disembarked off their plane. They met the new team and were stunned to find out that out of five, TWO OF THEM WERE WOMEN! Yep. The brilliant planners in our DoD had sent them a SPECOPS team with TWO WOMEN ARAB INTERPRETERS! In the short minutes ensuing the team transistion (yep, minutes) the outgoing team took the two women straight to a nearby O-6 who was equally stunned. Sending these women out on SPECOPS duty was the absolute kiss of death for them - SUICIDE. Get THIS: One of the women was a BLONDE! The O-6 immediately pulled the two women off the team and found other duty for them. (He literally saved their lives on the spot - they would have been dead within 24 hours.)
These people in the SPECOPS deserve our highest praise and our deepest gratitude and all the support we can give them. I do hope and pray that O-6 was able to shake enough trees all the way back to the Pentagon to keep such (politically-correct) stupidity from happening again.
