Ten months after Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" reached blockbuster status, an interfaith group of Catholics and Jews is still finding fault with the film, calling it a "notorious" reminder of Europe's anti-Semitic past.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the U.S. Catholic-Jewish Consultation Committee recently called the film a "modern version of the notorious medieval Passion Plays which so often over the centuries have triggered riots against the Jews of Europe."[snip]
"The Passion" is now angling for a place in the Oscar Award lineup for best picture, director, actor and cinematography, and is among the Top Five 2004 films for the People's Choice Awards for Favorite Movie Drama.
Although dogged by charges of anti-Semitism during its prerelease days, there has been no proven anti-Semitic incidents tied to the film since its release.

MISERABLE SERPENT BISHOPS JOIN WITH THOSE WHO CONDEMN MEL GIBSONS COURAGEOUS AND BEAUTIFUL EFFORT

Very timely criticism. What did they think of "The Robe" ?
I don't know why bishops would be moaning. Perhaps they feel threatened that Gibson isn't Catholic.
Guess we can count on the USCCB's vote for Fahrenheit 911.
Strange bedfellows, The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the U.S. Catholic-Jewish Consultation Committee, and the hollywood perverts and their supporters.
First they try to kill the movie at birth; when that fails the little people attempt to prevent any recognition or honor. No big surprise there.
Fortunately, to paraphrase one of their trite phrases, 'success is the best revenge'.
Pfffffffffttttttt.
Bishops are very touchy about their authority.
The Vatican has whole-heartedly endorsed the movie as superb, and all of the practicing Catholics I know have loved it.
when the "Passion" first came out, our snotty priest stated he didn't like it, too violent, etc etc...as if we parishioners needed his okay to go see it....
this from the same priest who also instructed us to go to the Move-On website for more info on one of his favorite crisis es.....
holy schumer... you think that gang of Commie fruitcakes on the Oscar committee would *dare* give that film an Oscar?
They'd *have* to be *forced* into it...
Mel Gibson is Catholic.
Thus the term - CINO - Catholic in name only.
Why is it that I didn't see anything anti-semitic about the film? Am I braindead or something? I just fail to see what the controversy is all about. I would think the discussion would be how Christ is betrayed by us all on a daily basis and this film just shows the physical side of the betrayal.
He denies the reforms of the Second Vatican Council!! That makes him Roman Catholic like every Roman Catholic has been for centuries since the 1960s.
It makes him a Protestant??? Get a grip!!!!
Absolute nonsense.
There is ZERO anti-Semitism in The Passion. None whatsoever.
