SKOKIE, ILL. Radio host Mike North (search) took his show on the road for what he believed was a good cause: Collecting cigarettes for soldiers overseas.
North urged his listeners in Skokie, Ill., to donate cigarettes to be sent to the troops. He called the campaign Smokes for Soldiers (search) and said he got the idea from the picture of James Miller (search), the 20-year-old Marine in combat in Iraq photographed with a lit cigarette dangling from his mouth.
His picture was plastered all over the newspapers and I started reading and he says, Im just doing whats supposed to be done, but guess what? Theres a shortage of cigarettes out here, North said.
The American Lung Association (search) opposes the Smokes for Soldiers drive, saying troops should be sent care packages that dont kill, and distributed a memo from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld (search) in which he advised that tobacco should be avoided because it impacts troop readiness.
Tobacco use presents an immediate and real danger for our soldiers who are on the lines today, said Joel Africk of the American Lung Association. More than 400,000 Americans die each year from smoking-related illnesses.

Optimist - An F-105 pilot worried about dying from lung cancer.
Our men and women in Iraq can drink purple milk as far as I'm concerned. The war presents a far greater danger to them than a couple of puffs on a cigarette.
It's this guy! From the American Lung Association. What a wuzz.

Great pix! Smokin'!
I bet fag/boy Joel would change his mind after chasing down terrorists all day long.
I adopted a soldier, don't know for sure who I got, but I'm packing a carton of Marlboro Reds in the box in with all the rest of the stuff. I figure if he/she doesn't smoke, they'll probably be able to trade a few smokes for an ungodly amount of STUFF from someone else!
Oh, and who can find out how much $$ or supplies the American Lung Association has spent on our soldiers? Not a lot, I'll bet!
American soldiers putting thier lives on the line in combat can have whatever they want !

Actually to all who were wondering about sending cigarettes to the soldiers.
Fox News had a story on tonight about a radio host in Skokie Illinois named Mike North who's collecting cartons to send to them. (He collected 100,000 cigs) You can probably get in touch with him at the radio's website to see if you can mail them to him to send or whatever. Their url is: http://www.670thescore.com/
The story also featured a press conference by the local ALA Antismoker Joel Africk, who said, and I quote:
"Tobacco use presents an immediate and real danger for our soldiers who are on the lines today..." The ALA went on to say that "our troops should be sent care packages that don't kill."
An "immediate and real danger" eh? I wonder if perhaps we could arrange for Mr. Africk to spend a few few weeks walking around Fallujah educating our soldiers about the dangers they are facing from tobacco smoke?
Antismokers are sometimes their own parody.

That sure is one good looking soldier. Is it just me or is it hot in here? LOL
Name any one that goes along with the American Liar (oops)Lung Association, and you will know.
It's not just you!
I know this. It is the perfect response for the tiny people who would impose a childish imposition on people about to die... for their health of course.
How asinine!
I'd take this guy over any of them in the American Lung Association. And that's a fact! :)
Our (large) office is tracking one unit in Iraq, since a member is the son of one of the women there.
I was pleasantly surprised that in addition to the smokes we sent him and his squad, he can buy them there for "only" $9 a carton.
The military is way too "PC" but not entirely clueless!
$9.00 a carton?? You are right, not very PC, but smart, nonetheless!
Actually he's an anti-fag boy.
On what those kids earn, that's way too much!
On what those kids are paid, that's way too much!
Too true. I remember being an E-2 and having to pay for my son's daycare so I could report back for duty. Even with my husband's pay (who was an E-3, but stationed elsewhere) it was really tight when my car payment was $300 a month.
I think I had like 150 bucks left over every payday for diapers, wipes, formula, ect. That had to include feeding myself and gas, plus other essentials, of course. Yeesh. We do lots better now that we are out and we only have ONE paycheck. Believe it or not, restaurant management pays A LOT better for similar hours.
