Massachusetts gays divorcing

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Less than seven months after same-sex couples began tying the knot in Massachusetts, the state is seeing its first gay divorces.

Newlyweds seeking to renounce the vows they so recently took have been trickling into probate courts across the state, filling out obsolete forms that still read "husband" and "wife."

Josh Friedes, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Freedom to Marry Coalition, said the rapid divorces are no cause for concern.

"It would be wonderful if every marriage lasted until a couple lived to a ripe old age, but unfortunately we know from our heterosexual peers that all too often there are irrconcilable differences, and for these couples, divorce is often the most humane option," Friedes said. "Anyone who argues that gay and lesbian couples divorcing is grounds for opposing gay marriage is being incredibly hypocritical."

The first gay divorce case in Suffolk County, which includes Boston, was filed Wednesday by a male couple who exchanged vows on May 22, five days after same-sex marriage was legalized.

One partner was a 33-year-old religious educator from Boston, the other a 39-year-old professor based in Washington. Since then, the couple said in their divorce filing, "our interests have grown in different directions." Each man signed a settlement attesting that the marriage had "irretrievably broken down."

The most difficult part of the settlement appeared to be custody of their three cats, who will live exclusively with the professor.

But "in recognition of the emotional hardship of such relinquishment," the settlement reads, the professor agreed to provide his ex "with periodic updates, photographs, and any health-related information pertaining" to the cats.

For shame! (I'd follow up with a wink, but given the nature of this story, it might be misinterpreted as a come on, LOL!)

I understand. People might think you were some kind of deviated prevert or something! I'm sure you'd never engage in such hideous preversions, but less enlightened people might think you were. I fully understand, even if you are a prevert, I forgive you! I've got no axe to grind. There's always hope. I'm sure there's a program that can help you overcome your disgusting vices. ;)

In homosexuals adopting children yes, in divorces with no assets and less than a year there is no money to be made.

Of course in "gay" years (sort of like dog years) a few months may be a long term relationship.

You're right about the dog years.....the one guy I know had a " new love of his life" every few months. And it's weird...one of the guys hated the other, because in his words, " they guy is a faggot" while he claimed he was "gay". I never really pushed for an explanation, but one was very feminine in his voice and gestures and I guess it turned the other one off.

Niiiice. Yikes! I do get a kick out of the flaming ones who are always admiring my shirts and asking me, "Girl, where did you get that luscious thing?" LOL

I love my jeans, but I've got a pretty shirt fetish...brings out the drag queens, I've noticed. LOL

Yeah, no difference. Right. Let's see how their divorce rate looks compared to real marriages after a couple of years.

Apparently offing your "spouse" is another option. The not-so-humane one.

""...but unfortunately we know from our heterosexual peers that all too often there are irrconcilable differences, and for these couples, divorce is often the most humane option...""

Queenie's got a problem with proportion and percentages. His brood makes up less than 5% of the total population, and these marriages (and divorces) are all in one state. The percentage of homosexual marriages vs. divorces in that state, since May 17th 2004 must be very close.

Whereas, the Homonazi's and their "STRAIGHTS GET DIVORCED TOO!" rhetoric don't ever mention that they're talking about the remaining 95% of the population, across 50 states.

"our interests have grown in different directions."

There is a typo in the word "directions".

They put a "di" where an "e" was supposed to be.
