At Least 3 Dead, 4 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting Witnesses: Alleged Gunman Went Onto Stage, Fired Shots

POSTED: 10:32 pm EST December 8, 2004 UPDATED: 11:36 pm EST December 8, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least three people died and four others were wounded after a shooting at a Columbus nightclub on Wednesday night, NBC 4 reported.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road.

Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported.

Shortly after the band began playing its first song, a man reportedly ran onto the stage and began shooting, according to a witness who identified himself as Sean. Some members of the audience reportedly thought the man running onto the stage with a gun was part of the band's act, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.

Witnesses said that several shots were fired at the band. Witnesses said that a bouncer at the club tackled the alleged gunman before that person was shot and killed. It was unclear as to whom shot the alleged gunman.

Alrosa Villa is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.

According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.

Damageplan featured former Pantera artists Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The pair were joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.

Good point. I never seem to hear him talk about how horrible the lyrics are in some of the other genres. Lyrics with fixation of murder, death, mutilation and suicide.

Odd though as a shooting incident with 7 no name people in a nightclub injured or dead may still be considered "breaking news" when it happens.

Helps to keep it in breaking if the perpetrator is or might be Muslim.

RIP Dimebag. My brothers went to school with Dimebag and Vinnie, very sad.

Was his brother Vinnie one of the killed as well? :(

People who were at the show posting on damageplan.com's message board say either Bob Zilla or Vinnie is dead.

I can't believe this.

I have the feeling if it wasn't a metal band, it might have stayed in BN where it was first posted.

"More proof that laws prohibiting Weapons in private businesses where alcohol is served are correct...sorry "gun slingers"."

What kind of moron are you?

Someone who is bent on killing another human despite the possibility of getting the death penalty is not going to be deterred because he might get a slap on the wrist for taking a gun into a bar.

Laws don't prevent criminal acts. They only proscribe a punishment for violating them.

I would have guessed that Ohio law forbids patrons' carrying firearms into a nightclub. But I guess not.

I mean if the law forbids patrons (both law-abiding and those with criminal intent alike) from carrying into nightclubs, it would prevent something like this, right?

If there were such a "no firearms in nightclubs" law and it couldn't prevent this, then the news media would soon focus on the ineffectiveness of the law and its counterproductive nature. Counterproductive aspect of the law resulting in criminals carrying into nightclubs, but law-abiding people not carrying into nightclubs, thus making the law-abiding into sitting ducks for low-life criminals.

Pantera was one of the biggest metal bands of the late 80's/early 90's.

It got knocked out of BN by the Sidebar Mod.

WTF is that BS about?

The shooter most likely doesn't have a CPL.

So when is Breaking News not Breaking News? I mean, it's not a Chicago high rise fire, but 5 people are murdered, including one public figure.

I see workplace shootings listed all the time in Breaking News. How is this different?
