At Least 3 Dead, 4 Wounded In Nightclub Shooting Witnesses: Alleged Gunman Went Onto Stage, Fired Shots

POSTED: 10:32 pm EST December 8, 2004 UPDATED: 11:36 pm EST December 8, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- At least three people died and four others were wounded after a shooting at a Columbus nightclub on Wednesday night, NBC 4 reported.

The shooting took place shortly after 10 p.m. at Alrosa Villa, located at 5055 Sinclair Road.

Two members of the heavy metal band Damageplan were reportedly shot and killed, including Dimebag Darrell, formerly with the band Pantera, NBC 4's David Wayne reported. The alleged gunman also died at the scene, Wayne reported.

Shortly after the band began playing its first song, a man reportedly ran onto the stage and began shooting, according to a witness who identified himself as Sean. Some members of the audience reportedly thought the man running onto the stage with a gun was part of the band's act, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.

Witnesses said that several shots were fired at the band. Witnesses said that a bouncer at the club tackled the alleged gunman before that person was shot and killed. It was unclear as to whom shot the alleged gunman.

Alrosa Villa is a popular north Columbus nightspot for young adults, featuring rock and heavy metal bands, NBC 4 reported.

According to the band's Web site, Damageplan was touring nationally. It performed in Buffalo, N.Y., on Tuesday night and had a concert scheduled in Flint, Mich., on Thursday.

Damageplan featured former Pantera artists Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. The pair were joined by vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bobzilla, according to their Web site.

How does one go about obtaining the nickname "dimebag?"

Someone needs to let Savage know so that he can't talk some more about how rap music makes people shoot each other.

Great point. It's a proxy thing, really.

In PA, it is legal to carry in bars and I do -- all the time, but I don't go to places where I would ever expect to need it. The one place that I went to that had a sign telling people to leave guns in the car was a joke. At least 3 people were carrying concealed and a 4th was carrying open.

Easy. When your band jumps off the hair/glam bandwagon, you change it from "Diamond" to "Dimebag".

I've seen some bad movies and eaten some bad waffles, but none that required shooting someone. ;-)

It appears the shooter wasn't there for the alcohol. He was there to kill the band members.

Awww man. Dimebag rocked. While not the kind of music I'd listen to casually, he was awesome when prepping up for a workout or going out for a night of serious boozing with some friends.

God rest his soul.

I just heard about it this morning.
To any metalhead worth their salt, this is horrible.

The shooter shot at Vince, but he crawled away on the floor and hit the deck (and you would too so no bullshit posts)

Well no, let me see.... Unarmed, drugged up lunatic shooting at me......

Yeah, I pretty much would have done the same thing.

Dime bag of what? Drugs????

Marijuana. That's a smaller size ($10) which he said was all he could afford when he first started smoking it, and the nickname stuck.

I was never a Pantera fan, but Dimebag was a very influential player. Most Freepers have probably never heard of him, but this is going to be a big deal in the music world. Expect the usual asinine gun-controlling Hollywood liberals to come out in force again.

So true. So very very true. That said, I have hung out with these guys a few times in the past and Darrel was a really nice guy. I am really at a loss for a motive. I am torn between a possible debt not being paid or just a plain ole' lunatic.

Metal and rock musicians don't.

True. They overdose each other and kill their parents (and selves).

It was unclear as to whom shot the alleged gunman.

Possibly a CCW holder?

I heard it was the cop that responded. There's almost no way it was a CCW holder. Carrying in a liquor establishment in Ohio will get you a couple years in the slam.

You don't want to go there.

lol. Take your medicine, BJ.

if you're going to try to convince me that the music, the message, and the players are better than rap counterparts, there isn't enough time...

It sounds like muslims defending their religion: oh, we're not like those extremists!

Dimebag had more talent in his left pinkie than the entire "Hip Hop Community" will ever have.

I can't comment, but "talent" is a subjective term.

I've been at clubs where even the doorman has been knifed at the venue. Leather jackets offer "some" protection. Fat and muscle too.

Doorman is not as easy as just asking for IDs.

That's for sure. You need to recognize people who are barred and it helps a lot if you can spot troublemakers before they actually start anything.

I do it about one night a week and I'm a lot better than when I started, but still not as good as some.

We aren't at war with Muslims, either; we're at war with terrorists. It's an invalid point.

More proof that laws prohibiting Weapons in private businesses where alcohol is served are correct...sorry "gun slingers".

Good thing that law was in place or someone might have gotten shot and killed at the nightclub!
